im going to be buying a car next month, really like the look of focus's and from what i hear they handle well. on the other hand they are quite a bit heavier than a corsa 1.4 SRi so im not sure which i would be better off with in terms of performance.

im guess for comfort/reliability the focus will win it?

has anyone owned either of these cars and can offer an opinion on which you think i'm better off getting.

The Focus handles better (Corsas are godawful), is faster, smoother and nicer to drive. It's a clear winner of those two, another class of car really. Far nicer interior too. It will be thirstier though.

(Own 1.8 focus, driven plenty of 1.0 and 1.2 Corsa's long-term)

There's no contest between these cars. A 1.4 chavmobile or a pokey (ish) 1.8 car that is probably the best thing to come out of ford for a good while.

hah, was hoping you'd all say that. is the focus much nippier than the corsa? they have similar claimed bhp/ 0-6 times.
will have to double check with insurers before i go buying anythin, getting a 1.8 insured for less than 2K fully comp seems too good to be true for a 17 y/o

I'd go with the focus too, it is a much better car and a lot less likely to have been abused than a corsa sri. I've had loads of fun in the early focus' when we had them on the fleet. Left foot braking FTW. Laughing

Just make sure the clocks/odo all work properly though they can be a bit expensive to fix and are know to go wrong.

Try and get a Zetec as the suspension and interior are better. Climate pack (heated windscreen/mirrors and AC is handy for winter too).

If insurance is an issue, note that the 5 door versions are a group lower than the 3 door versions. (insurers know younger drivers in 3dr's like me are more likely to take advantage of the independent rear suspension for lift-off oversteer purposes)

one of the reasons i was looking at focus's. not many boy racers buy them which also gives the added bonus of hopefully not being hassled too much by plod. a few people i know with cars more common for young people to drive are getting pulled over and being given grief by the police constantly.

plus focus's have a touch of class about them which you tend not to get with the usual corsa/nova/ 106's

I had a corsa sri once.. for about a week, it was crap.
We've got a Focus tdci at the moment and to be honest i cant think of any faults with it. Its economical, comfy, quick enough for a family car and it handles sweetly too. As mentioned the Zetecs and Ghias come with uprated suspension for better handling so you might want to consider one of those Thumbs Up

I enjoy Focii ...pretty decent handling, and I once got 122 out of a Hertz 1.6 hire car down a big fuck off hill on the way out of Southampton airport (heading for Winchester) ...could have got a little more if some tosser in a transit hadn't pulled out in front of me!

That very same Focus also managed to get all four wheels about 3 feet off the deck!!! Laughing

I love hire cars.

It's always like a competition to see how much you can break it through neglect of mechanical sympathy.

Once when I went to America I had a mustang lined up as a hire car. Great, thought I. I turned up and all of the mustangs were out, leaving me with a ford 500. A ford 500 is a slightly bigger mondeo with a 3l engine.

I was not impressed, particularly seeing as I was going to be driving this thing for closed to 1000 miles in under a week.

So, I played in it. About 20 minutes after picking it up the oil change warning came on. This was my green light to hunt the redline. That and learn drag starts with an autobox. Driving it around the odd field was fun.

Handed it back with bald front tyres, an autobox that clunked into second, a knock from the suspension, and a touch of top end noise.

5000 miles on the clock. Teach them not to give me a mustang, fuckers.

I drive my dad's 2ltr Focus, it's a great car, much better than my mum's 1.2 Corsa.

Driven the Corsa when they are on holiday, it's like driving a go kart, but not in a good way. The handlings aweful, and it gets blown around in the slipstream of trucks on the m-way. Laughing

Even if the Focus was dog slow I would still have it before a Corsa. No one respects a Corsa driver. Wink

I had a 1.8 XSI Corsa C as a rental car.
It was bloody quick. But it did NOT handle what so ever. You'd throw it at a corner, and it would carry on going straight!

Me and Jim (Dam_buster) nearly ended up in the Maidstone River. Laughing

Focus, Never really driven one enough to cast a genuine opinion. I've had a go in a 1.8 Millennium Focus though. It was quite a nippy motor.

After all is said and done though mate. You will be flooring it for about a week. Then when you realise you are spunking £10 a day on petrol. The 0-60 time will be of no interest to you. You'll be wishing you got the 1.4 Corsa for the better MPG. Laughing

I got a 2004 2.0 focus ghia. Insurance isn't much different to the 1.8 and now, thanks to Alistair Darling, neither is the tax Thumbs Up (for now).
Great car, I love it to bits.
I've driven corsa's twice, and on both occasions I couldn't wait to give em back. They're appalling. Only usefull purpose they serve is killing joyriders who wrap em round trees.

why do you care about 0-60 and BHP on a car? or are you one of these ''buy reehsers''.

also, why are you even comparing the two?
corsas should never have been invented.

I drove one of the last of the old shape Focuses for my pass plus a few years ago. It was a 'sport' diesel and was quite impressive. Minimal turbo lag, good in-gear performance, engine inaudible at legal speeds and had lovely ride quality.

I also once drove a Corsa for a couple of hours, which was quite enough. The handling was soggy and the engine felt like it had less torque than the wiper motor.

why take 15 seconds to get to 60 if you could do it in ten

if acceleration didnt matter everyone would be driving the most economical diesel on sale.
as it is they arent.

in reality im not going to be doing many 0-60 runs, granted. but 0-60 is the only way to judge a car i've never driven on its acceleration.

If you've got a bike for fun, you xxan afford to just have the car for economical transport in bad weather or in a suit and the like Smile

Ideally you'd be looking at the top end too as an indication of how much it'll be revving on the motorway, and don't underestimate the importance of fuel consumption too as you won't believe how much of it you'll go through if you're using much of the performance.

Also bear in mind that 0-60 is often fairly misleading as a comparison between different cars. Quite often some cars will need a change to 3rd gear just before 60mph which makes the time seem unusually slow, and others will change just after which might make the figures look quicker than the car actually is.

Finally, consider that even if the figures for the Corsa and Focus are equal, the Focus will probably be the more relaxing car to drive not just because it's bigger and less tinny, but because the 1.8 should have more low-down torque so you won't need to be changing gear as often anyway.
