Does anyone know how a transistor works?

I stuck it in a circuit that was putting out 2.36V and now with the transistor in its putting out 5V

Can anyone explain?
Pretty please with strawberry jelly and ice cream on top

It works because it's magic.

All micro electronics is .. it's not real any of it, it's all made up in your head. My advice would be to put it on a brick and hit it with a hammer NOW, before the dark lord Beelzebub comes a knockin' at your door.

Stop that voltage amplifying it's very very naughty.

If I apply a transistor to this pound coin I have, will I get 3 pound coins back??

If so, I'm off to the shop to buy a box of transistors Very Happy

hi
think it reduces the resistance in the circuit. v=i/r that or it increases the current Very Happy

This is basically how transistors work. If I can remember electronics in school:

You have three legs. An 2 inputs and an ouput. (Can't remember what the legs are called) When the transistor gets a current detected in one particular leg, however small the current is it opens the 'switch'. This allows current to flow from the other input to the output. The voltage flowing through the transistor is not effected by the voltage detected in the first input.
i.e. the point is that you can have a small voltage going into the first input put can have a much larger voltage flowing through the other input and output.

At least thats what my limited knowledge says.
Not sure how much detail you wanted?
I could try and go into details about p-n-p and n-p-n transistors. I believe it has to do with charged electrons :-S

From what I remember on my degree, you're about right mate - it's an electronic switch. There are three types of Transister though, pnp, npn and MOS.

That sounds correct ginger one thanks! I wasnt too sure how it worked, but it would explain why one leg is connected to the power supply and the other leg is connected to the rest of the circuit Smile

WOOHOO!

Just to add to your knowledge, and anyone elses, the legs are called, The base, emittor and collector.

Thanks again

Kind of worrying isn’t it when you consider that his college and basic training was in this kind of stuff…..

Do you think if I can get him committed I can legally take possession of his bikes?

It's especially worrying that it's two of the forum's oldest members who are suggesting that mystical powers lie within electrical circuits...aren't you supposed to get wiser?...or was that wider...Razz

Er, no it's not. An Amplifier is a circuit that can be made up from transistors, and transistor is an electronic switch - which is run by the magical pixie people.

Are the underpants gnomes the ones that run off with all the socks as well? Or do they contract out?
