Hi all,

Noticed the other day when I turn my handle bars to the right I can hear a squeek sort of noise, a bit like chalk on a blackboard sort of noise. It only happens when turned to the right, I've not noticed it when riding just when moving my bike to lock it up.

Not too sure what this could be if anything, maybe a bearing of some sort? I can't quite tell where it is coming from apart from the handlebar/steering area.

Thanks

wd40 up your head set bearings.
All the shitty cold wet weather may have just took all the geace off them. Allthough they should be well sealed to be honest.
Is a cable rubbing on anything like your forks. Brake line, throttle cable or something.

good luck

DON'T wd40 the headset bearings, you more likely to wash away any grease that is still in there.

put bike on center stand and weight down the back so the front wheel is off the ground, now turn the bars from lock to lock

if there is any stiffness or notchness it needs investigating.

also grap the forks from the front of the bike and with the steering straight try to push and pull them backwards and forwards there should be no perceptible play if there is this could be worn headset bearing or depending on your forks worn fork bushes, if they are normal forks grap them above the bottom slider and do it again, if there is still play its the bearing, if not couls be the fork bushes.

you don't say what bike it is, but i'm inclined to agree with the intelligent poster ...

DON'T WD your bearings ....

and as also said it's probably just a cable or wiring rubbing the frame, fairing or mudguard, get the front off the floor and track it down so you're happy

I thort maybe the wd40 would get rid of any crap in the cups the bearings sit in.
And give enough lube to keep them in good order.
I have wd40'd mine in past time Sad
Bad move i am guessing.

WD40 is a de-greaser not a lubricant. I once killed an open valve motor with the stuff by spraying some at the guides to lube them. They picked up on the valves and within three days there was 3mm ovality in them.

its more than likely a cable rubbing on the wiring loom.

definitely not a "good" move, the reason for greasing bearings is that it will sit in there and not just run out ...

or at least not until you start squirting copious quantities of WD at them in the attempt to stop a squeak...

grab an open cage bearing (no seals in it), hold the centre race and spin the outer one, it's quiet and doesn't spin for long at all , now hose loads of WD at it and start spinning it again , as the grease washes out it'll spin freer/faster and for longer, but listen to the noise it makes as the balls rattle around between the two races...

in that condition (dry) your wheel bearings would overheat and start chewing themselves up in very few miles ( i know the original post was about steering bearings), have you ever seen a bearing that has run "dry" ?? the balls can go oval, squareish (discoloured of course) along with the races having bits of metal from the balls (or them selves) stripped and hammer welded back in , right up to the point of either the balls starting to get spat out or seizing the bearing and starting to spin one of the races, which then starts to burn/abrade the metal it is supposed to fit in/on ...

once the grease has run out they then run dry, which allows dampness/water access, steering bearings move very little in normal useage so rust can then start attacking the surfaces really easily without the grease protecting them ...

ok, i've probably repeated myself here but i wanted to give a full and clear description/potential of using WD in bearings that are supposed to have grease in them...

hope that helps

I recently fitted a new clutch cable but that was pulled through attached to the old one so that it sat in exactly the same place.

The bike is an NSR125, no centre stand unfortunately just a side stand.

Now the bad weather has gone I will be taking the petrol tank off to do some repair work on it and will see if I can find anything causing the steering squeek while I'm at it.

Thanks guys
