So i'm wanting to paint the frame on my project bike, ive prepped it and its ready for primer and black paint, ive got a compressor and the paint gun attachment ready.

I went to a recommended body paint shop and they quoted £50 for primer, hardener and paint, enough to cover a small frame.

Seems very expensive, just wanted to know what exactly i should be buying as i am only going off advice from shops at present and where is the cheapest place to buy from (either online/catalogue or shops around west yorkshire).

Thanks in advance
Mike

Hi mike. if you have a compressor and a good gun, your easy half way there. 2K paint gives the best finish by far. As to where to get it simply ebay. Black i take it your after for a frame maybe. simply buy a good 2K primer, then a top coat 2k Black perhaps..

you wont go wrong with this

https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1L-2-Pack-High-Solids-Compliant-Grey-2K-Primer-Kit_W0QQitemZ260220105734QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item260220105734&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1345%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318

for the colour try this

https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1L-2-Pack-Solid-Jet-Black-2K-Gloss-Paint_W0QQitemZ260220104228QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item260220104228&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1345%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318

you will have an outstanding finish with 2K. make sure you go and get some universal 2k thinners too..

IMO i like to use 2k on nice panels as you can see it. But there is stuff called POR15. Its great to use on frames. (Brush on)

https://www.frost.co.uk/productList.asp?catID=28&frostCat=Rust&subcatID=37&frostSubCat=POR-15

Or the cheapy way like what iam using on the GP100 rebuild.

hi,
havnt looked at he links previous poster included, but remember some 2 pack painting causes cancer!
need a good mask/respirator, & cover up every part of your body, as it can be absorbed through inhalation, absobtion through skin,(ears, hands etc)
some sort of cyanide derivative, nasty stuff..apparently
so get an air fed mask (not cheap) or use one of those respirators with twin replaceable cartridges, which are ok for short bursts of spraying.
thats what i used with one of those white "nonce suits" with hood.
oh, & as for prices that sounds a bit steep. i got filler primer, basecoat & clearcoat as well as 2k thinners & basecoat thinners to do full set of plastics on my rs for £54! (all mipa products)
cheers,
GAZ

Stirling is right
Any 2k (2pack paint) containing a hardener such as primer or the laquer (topcoat) has a type of cyanide in it, which causes lung cancer.

Think everyone has already covered everything else.

What ever paint you buy , check and make sure it is petrol and solvent resistant/proof.

It would be a shame to ruin your hard work the first time you spill some fuel at the petrol station.

If the frame is striped bare, then i would say send it off for blasting and powdercoating (after making sure all bearing surfaces and threads are taped up), It will give a much more durable finnish than paint.

price up all your primers, paints, thinners and activators, and dont forget the sand paper masking tape, and masks and spraying overalls etc.

Then get a price for powdercoating, from a good bike shop (or go direct to a powder coating firm-cut out the middle man), compare the two and go from there.

You will find powdercoating will be cheaper and far less effort, and you are guarenteed and good long lasting finnish.

Me and my oldman paint bikes, and most frames we get come powdercoated black (one of the cheapest colours) to ensure a good tough coating, then we paint the frame whatever colour the customer want, often a candy or a colour that matches the body work, I much prefer it that way as the prep is easier and any chips that the bike gets afterwards are less likely to go to bare metal causing rust/ flacking etc.

Thanks for the replys, i eventually decided to get 2K paints since i got primer hardener paint and thinners for £20 from ebay, already have a lot of kit available to me so powder-coating doesn't look cheap.

Ive got all the breathing stuff and a suit as mentioned and am now just after some advice on painting.

The plan is to paint in the garage, covering everything with cheap throw away dust sheets to make a kind of paint tent but with the garage door open for ventilation.

Is the current weather too cold to paint in, especially since i'll have the door open? how many coats of primer/paint should i do?

If possible i would like to get it done this weekend so i can start putting bits back on the frame and get onto the engine Razz

hi,
dunno where you live.. but up here, today was the 1st time all week the thermometer has risen above freezing! (& that was to a heady 3deg above freezing, lol)
far too cold for painting!
unless you can close the door, get some sort of ventilation & get a heater (them halogen types are good if you have leccy in the shed)
hence the reason i now spray paint in the spare room, much to my mother & my missus's delight!
& i usually do 3 or 4 coats of each but never done a frame, sorry.
cheers,
GAZ
