Okay, picture this.
Yesterday about 4.30pm we were in the car, my wife driving, down the M1 about a junction or 2 before Meadowhall aiming to get off at J33. We were in the middle lane overtaking slower traffic in the inside lane and approaching the next car that was in the inside lane. My wife says there's a car right on our tail and being downright dangerous, next thing we know it's flashing it's lights and blinding her. She starts slowing down when this car then puts its blue lights on and it's a marked police car! We check the speed but aren't speeding and haven't been, so wonder if we're being pulled over or what the hell is going on. She then pulls into the inside lane and the police car then zooms off past us in the middle - the whole time this takes place there is no traffic at all in the outside lane.
Totally puzzled we then see the police car do the same to another car ahead of us also in the middle lane, only this time the car is overtaking someone in the inside lane and also coming upto a slip road that joins the motorway, and on that slip road is an HGV indicating to join the motorway.

The actions of this police car were just crazy and plain dangerous, I have no idea what their intentions were and wished I had taken their reg plate so I could report them. I could only guess the police driver had some personal vendetta against middle lane drivers wether or not they were using it properly! My wife and I have always hated middle lane hoggers and set out to avoid doing this ourselves, and this is just another incident that puts the police even lower down in my estimation!

(Edited from below!) Wink

So you were undertaking?

Tut tut.

I guess the copper wasn't hammering down the inside lane since that would be just as dangerous as most mugs tend not to check their mirrors.

Bugger, I can never work this out!!! Embarassed

But surely the 'inside lane' should be the lane nearest the middle of the motorway and the 'outside lane' should be the one nearest the hard shoulder as this is on the 'outside' of the motorway!? Question

I always had it in my head that it was the side nearest the driver, ie. the right (unless you had a lhd car). And the other is 'that side off over there' eg. passenger.

WTF is wrong with 'left' and 'right' anyway. Neutral

Because if you are describing an accident or something, left or right could be interpreted differently (ie looking from the front or rear of the car?)

Nearside is curb side, offside is driver side.

As for motorways, the inside lane is the 'slow lane', middle lane is obviously the middle lane and the outside lane is the 'fast lane' (Except it shouldn't actually be any faster than the slow lane or you will be speeding Razz )

How about lanes 1,2 and 3 ?

Lane 1 is the lane you should drive in unless overtaking, and lane 3 is just for Audi drivers? Laughing

Please stay off the roads. Also how could you not see a marked police car approaching in your mirrors?

Have you reported him then as you took the reg number?

To be fair, I've had something similar.

Got pulled by an unmarked who decided to follow me after a bit of speeding, then saw a giant wheelie, then decided they should aggressively tailgate me. So I merrily fucked off (as you would when an estate is trying to park on you), only to get the blues a bit further.

Long story short, they didn't pursue it when they realised they had caused a risk of an accident. This is despite two officers witnessing 100+ speeding and a big wheelie before the event. However they were pushing for dangerous driving until I pointed out to them that the only dangerous riding followed them aggressively following me.

So I'm fairly certain they're aware they shouldn't do it. They just like doing it the jumped up cocks, and weren't expecting a logical debate on the roadside.

Give em hell if you can mate Thumbs Up

Lol, I think it's quite possible to be a good driver without remembering what 'offside' and 'nearside' stand for... Rolling Eyes

Or were you just trying to be smart using a commonly used phrase like the punch/tits/garry situation. Razz

Well for one I wasn't driving as stated in the original post, it was dark and from what my missus told me the car approached at high speed, got very close to the back of our car and proceeded to blind us (I was looking round at that point) with their full beam. It wasn't until they overtook that we could see it was a marked car.

Where did I say I took the reg number!? I didn't, it all happened too fast and with it being dark and also being blinded by the full beam I couldn't see their reg.

It sounds like he was having a purge on lane 2 hoggers.
I was doing about 80 in lane 1 on an empty motorway. i came up behind a car in lane 2 over took him in lane 3 and went back to lane one. the car stayed in lane 2. a few moments later a second car came up from behind and put his blues on, didn't pull me for doing 80 but pulled the guy hogging lane 2 doing 70.
