Anyone know about a crash on the A2 last Friday in which a guy on a bike died? I heard today they have charged a driver with murder.

Motorcyclist killed in A2 collision is named

A motorcyclist killed in a crash on the A2 has been named as 43-year-old Stephen Whiting, of Sydney Road, Chatham.

Police want to trace the driver of a van they believe was involved in the accident.

The collision happened on the A2 coastbound at 5.35pm on Friday, December 5.

It occurred between the Cobham turn-off and the A289 Strood junction.

Kent Police spokesman Jane Walker said: "Police are trying to trace the driver of a vehicle described by witnesses as a white flatbed van.

"It is believed to have been involved in the collision but did not stop.

"The driver may have been unaware of the collision and it is unclear whether the van would have been damaged."

Police want witnesses who may have seen the van parked, possibly with damage to it.

They also want to hear from anyone who may have seen the the red Suzuki bike and van being driven just before the crash.

The make and registration of the van it is not known but it is understood to be a small flatbed rather than a truck.

Anyone who can help should contact North Kent Police on 01474 366609

I caught the tail-end of the jams from this on the way home on Friday. The A2 was closed from the Gravesend (C) turnoff all the way to the Rochester Cinema turnoff at rush-hour. I ended up going through Meopham then taking the M26/M20 home.

Father-in-law was chatting to a fireman at the weekend who said the biker was taken out by a flat-bed and was killed instantly. The flat-bed drove off leaving the body in the middle of the carriageway. Nice.

Hope they find out what happens. Rest in peace fellow A2 rider.

Hmm the story I heard was of an accident on the same day near the Black Prince. I got stuck in traffic up by Kidbrooke at about 3:00 and had to use the A20/M25/A2 (in my work van) to get home. At just before 4pm the A2 at Gravesend was flowing ok.

Seems that there was also a bike acident by the Black Prince the same day. The story I heard seems to be a mix of the two incidents. I heard that the bike rider had a bit of argy with the van driver who side-swiped him deliberately knocking him off and he was killed by a following vehicle.

Looks like the biker paid the ultimate price for a moment of hot-headed retaliation over what was probably a minor incident. Beware the red-mist guys & gals - it doesn't make much difference to you who is 'to blame' if you end up dead.
