Been working on my bike these cold nights and the weather is becoming a pain. Can't really work when its cold...

I know I can end up buying a gas blower... but can anyone recommand anything else to keep the garage warm?

thanks

Infra red heater, in that they don't warm the air (which can escape) they warm when the infrared radiation touches your skin, the problem with them is they are very directional so you have one above you , your feet will be cold and anywhere that is shaded...

Calor gas bottles aren't that expensive, not cheap mind but do last a fair while.

We used to have a bottled gas fire in doors many a year ago when I was little. It was on wheels and have seen them in the odd workshop.

If push comes to shove then maybe a metal bin and some wood.

If you can get to Dalston with a car or van in the week I have a calor gas heater you can have which I found in some buildings I'm demolishing. You can have a bottle too but it's empty. You need the bottle to get a full one without paying a deposit.

Bet you that fan heater will cost a fortune to run though Thumbs Down

I got this for the garage, its only 2kw, very cheap to run and heats the place up a treat quite quickly even in sub temps like now. You can also program it to come at certain time so its heated up by the time you go in Thumbs Up

If i were you i would go for a small propane space heater or the diesel space heaters. i bought a big space heater a while back, it heats the garage in seconds even on low.

I normally get the biggest gas bottle i can, which is around £40 depending on the time of year. (for some reason it changes all the time)

I'm after a woodburner for my garage. If I get brave enough I might try making one out of an old gas bottle.

wood burner is the answer and you can make one from any large can especially the type that have a small screw lid for pouring the contents out cause you can put your chimney from that, thats what ive done anyway, free heating

These space heaters are brilliant, will heat up a big garage in a minute or two. Wish I had one. Laughing

How do I cut open a gas bottle without killing myself?

Hi,
there isnt still gas in it, is there?
(just got an image of you attacking it with an angle grinder & the resulting sparks=boom! lol)
need to remove the valve, & get the gas displaced.
im sure if the whole adjuster/valve thing has been out for ages & its open to the air, it will be sufficiently vented.
but if your removing the adjuster (which im pretty sure is just a case of loosening off the nut) yourself, make sure its done in the open, with no naked flames etc.
then fill up the bottle wth water from a hose pipe, this should displace any gas left.
then its time for the angler grinder!
cheers,
GAZ

Also heard of people connecting a hose to an exhaust and sticking that in the container with the engine running for a bit before starting - so hopefully removing a fair bit of oxygen as well as gas.

I just use an oil-filled radiator in my garage - they're pretty cheap to buy now and as my garage isn't too drafty, works pretty well when the door's closed.

I have a big propane fired space heater for my garage but I find that everything cold tends to condensate and get damp. Eg the outside of my bikes fuel tank will condensate over, as will all the the tools in my big roll cab/top box. Yes it keeps me warm, but it does have the downsides too.

Nowadays I tend to stay out of the garage in the bitterly cold weather. Thumbs Up

Propane, paraffin and diesel heaters all produce large amounts of moisture when they burn, roughly 1 gal of water for every gal of fuel burnt. Although they are very quick to heat the garage up the downside is the condensation and the resulting rusty tools and bikes. Last winter I insulated the garage door and bought a fan heater which knocks the chill off the air in a few minutes.

Not recommended. Carbon monoxide is explosive at between 12% and 75% concentrations in air.
