Just for my own peace of mind if you will (or feel free to tell me I'm a fool if I am!).

Took various bits of the '91 cg125s engine apart for gasket replacing fun this weekend. When we took off the left hand side engine cover, there was a load of very fine white powder inside. Now, when I took it off a few weeks ago to do the valve clearances, the white stuff was there, but was solid.

So! Could anyone tell me what it is (was, as I think it's all gone now...) and if it should actually be there? The bike got back to London from Cambridge this afternoon without any issues (well, none it didn't already have...), but knowing my luck it's something vital.

Thanks in advance!

Laura

Almost certainly aluminium oxide. The result of corrosion of the inside of the cover.

A good spraying of WD40 can help keep it at bay.

Your bike has been used for moving drugs lol just joking. sounds like the above and wd40 should resolve this as stinkwheel explained.

If someone used a cheap Chinese gasket set, it could have been asbestos. Many cheap gasket sets still used asbestos in their composition although fibres, not powder.
