Allow me to draw your attention to the following link..

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Resident-Evil-Archives-Umbrellas-Uncovered/dp/0744006554/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1228605315&sr=8-1

I have a copy of that in the loft, I think I paid maybe 15 quid for it a few years ago, read it a bit, then it got piled with the rest.

It is clearly now no longer availible, and those who still have copies seem to be charging ridiculous money, cheapest used copy is £80 rising to £250, the new copy quoted on amazon auctions is £790!!

Surely people don't pay these prices. Is this usual with out of print books, or have I just missed something?

Are these things a bubble, i.e. in a few years will it be worth pennies?

I don't particularly want to part with it, but it seems there could be some serious investable value in books if you knew the right ones to hoard.

Things of that nature DO cross hands for large amounts of money , I know because I sold a transformers toy for a large sum once , and also a first edition of a couple of books...

But it doesn't happen that frequently....but then again I don't advertise my first editions (and I keep them sealed in plastic).

Also you may well be playing bigger fool theory instead rather than any intrinsic value ie they think they can sell it on for more...

Also people are struggling to find forms of investment to protect their wealth since gold can't be gotten easily (there are huge waiting lists) and thus this forms a part of an alternative investment...

But the problem is books deteriorate over time the yellowing is due to the acid in the paper.... and some of my books written before WWI are starting to turn to dust.

Hi

Depends on the book. Most will just lose value. Some get collectable. Looks like you got lucky.

My father got flooded out last year. Some of the books that got damaged were dirt cheap when he bought them 40 years ago, but now virtually unobtainable and expensive if you can find them.

All the best

Keith

got some Audels trade manuals sitting on shelves, seem to be worth a small amount more than the dollar asked for them in the 40's.

Karen bought a book about Congleton a few years ago for a few quid, she sold it on Amazon marketplace a couple of months ago for £100. You can get lucky and people do pay silly amounts for books.

Mind you, I might be one of those people soon. I want to get all of Terry Pratchetts Discworld books in hardback and the early ones are going for £££.

Interesting, thanks folks Karma

Why do you want them all in hardback Col? Just for collectors sake, or for investment purposes?

Just for collecting really, all of his new ones from the last few years I've bought in hardback and I'd just like to extend that back to his earlier stuff. I think hardback books are much nicer.

Yeah, happens a lot. A book that is deemed essential for one of my modules at uni is no longer published and the cheapest that we can get them is at £50, which yeah isn't a lot, but considering it was £15 new when published, it seems a lot of money.

I can't wait for the day that a lot of books get published online.

I've been collecting Motocourse book for a few years now. I have them all except for 1976-77, 77-78, 79-80 & 81-82.
These books cost about a tenner, if not less when new. A 1976 copy sold on ebay recently for £460!.
