Well it's motorcycle forum cherry losing time and i have a big ask, ADVICE.

My dad had been a huge fan of bikes and owned everything from chicken chasers to the huge Kawasaki vulcan sat gathering dust in the garage now. To be honest i listened but didn't pay too much attention which is something i now really regret as he passed away Thumbs Down earlier this year.

Along with the Rolls SS2 which he almost finished he left a 1979 Harley FXEF and as my final thank you to him i WILL finish it and take it down to his resting place to make him shake 1 more time.

He was never 1 for writing anything down and although i have so much to do the first thing i need to get hold of is a fuel pump for the twin carb and just need some names if anyone can help. It needs to be a continuos pump like something from an old corsa but it can't be too powerful as the carb will sit level with the engine.

Once i get this i'll move on to the next issue which may be the rear fender or building the exhaust system but i'll let you know as i go. I've added a couple of pics so you can see where i am, i've dropped the front (just by changing the yoke) and have extended the rear slightly, a few little changes like the v-rod rear wheel, honda forks, straighter bars and the best seat in the world - i'm sure it was designed for my old mans rear end! Anyway i should have this all aligned this weekend!

Can't offer much help, but good luck and don't be tempted to bolt loads of chrome stuff to it.

It has decent lines and it would be a shame to spoil them.

No chance of doing that, i did speak with him about it and the last thing he would have ever wanted was dirty bits of chrome over it. The engine is being sprayed black and the frame is going to have a very detailed front that will merge with matt black further back with a flake effect where they meet!!!

I was just thinking. My Honda VFR750 has an external fuel pump. Never had to have any dealings with it which implies they are pretty reliable.

Also nice and compact. I'm not sure if it is the type you are after but I found a picture of one:

whats wrong with gravity fed from the tank? or is the tank somewhere other than above the engine?

looks like you have a bit of work to do still but your dad will be watching Wink

Thanks for your replies so far. Surprised Very Happy

The Vfr 1 is the type i'm after - nice and compact so it can be hidden but i'm worried it's going to be a bit too powerful and flood the carb. My dad had figured out which to use but hadn't written it down anyway!!

I think the reason gravity isn't going to work is because of the position of the carb, i can't remember what it's called (i'll find out tomorrow) but it's going to stick out a bit. All i can be sure of is he spent a bit of time prepping it, finding it and looking for the pump so i'm just trying to honour his ideas. In saying that i will be leaving the NOS kit off and selling that on (he was mad).

Funny you should mention the tank as that's another problem. It's a split tank and the dials are mounted on a centre console but him being the neanderfal he was he removed the tanks with a hammer and now i've got to make 1 as i can't find 1 anywhere - i can't even find manual!

I can't see why the fuel pump could be too powerful.

My VFR just has normal carburettors with normal needle valves in the float chamber, Harley ones will be totally overengineered in comparison.

I would imagine the fact that the tanks were removed using a hammerl means he never intended the bike to have that style of tank. If i were you, i'd have a look about and see what looks good.

I reckon a BSA Bantam tank would look pretty good on that bike.

The pump Stinkwheel has pictured is not continuous it's a standard diaphragm pump made by Mitsubishi as fitted to many Japanese motorcycles. If you really want a continuous pump you need to take a look at the type sold for Nitrous kits.

Personally I can't see why a Diaphragm pump wouldn't be acceptable to use and they tend to be lower pressure than continuous pumps. In fact the pressure is low enough that they can't pump past a closed float valve.
