I note that the above site lists both my home phone number and previous work number, I believe claiming that someone has previously done a search on it (very unlikely, I reckon).

Do a search for your landline number on google and it'll probably turn up the above site.

Not sure where they did get their numbers from, but to me it seems to be a phone-spammers tool; they can easily find a massive list of phone numbers by area to call.

Any ideas on the legalities of this, legalities of asking to be removed (at which points I, of course, expect to be added to twenty other less-legitimate lists.)

Also, can I make requests under the data protection act to see exactly when my phone number was added, etc? (Though I'm sure they'll just make it up.)

I came across this site yesterday after doing a search for my g/f's works phone number. My G/f works for the local council and yesterday her dept was bombarded with calls from swingers looking for hookups. Apparently one of the girls she works with is getting harrassed by an ex who has gone and put an ad on a swinging website using her works phone number. This is just the latest stunt he's pulled. He's also kidnapper (or catnapped) her cat. He's scored all the windows of her house with a glass cutter and earlier this year she discovered her car had a tracker device fitted to it. Very creepy!. She's complained to the police about him but they're not taking it very seriously.

We signed up to tps years ago. As with you it didn't stop sky constantly phoning. I told e, if they rang me again I would cancel the subscription outright. It stopped them ringing but they got their own back when I eventually wanted to sack them off. They kept me on hold for about an hour then told me I had to give them 30 days notice so I had to make another payment...

I can explain this one. BT Sales people used to get 5p for "TPS with consent" . With TPS, companies are allowed to call you with your consent. So honest sales people at BT say "I'll give you TPS, a free service that stops other companies from cold calling you", and dishonest ones just stick BT's consent on it anyway.

You can ask BT "Do I have 'TPS - Consent given' or 'TPS - No Consent'". Smile
