I've had my CB500 since August, when I got it the downpipes were black (looked freshly painted) but in the 4/5months I've been riding it they have gone reddy-brown with rust.

How fast will they rust through ? Is it imperitive that I re-paint them now ? I know it would be good practise to do so now, but are they going to crumble over this winter ? If so, anyone recommend a decent paint that is easy to apply ? (spray?).

Thanks.

PS. Just got myself a fenda-extenda.

I used cylinder black.(but BBQ paint also works)
You can buy it from halfords i think. You should do it straight away, just rub and surface rust off then paint it on with a brush.
Takes less than 10mins to do.

Once they start rotting it's pretty much downhill from there rapidly.
Especially with the salt on the wet roads we've had lately.

In that case I'll stop relying on a weekly blast of WD40 and nip over to Halfords later...

...and I'll finally get on with fitting my DIY fenda extenda.

the wd40 just burns off anyway Razz

I found a fender extender and bbq paint the best solution. not perfect but certainly a good option.

Painting externally won't do that much good, as downpipes tend to rot from inside out , unless they are decent quality stainless at which they still rot just slower as stainless passivises, (which is why its a bad idea to clean stainless), and forms a protective layer when it decays on its outer surface..

Unless your bike burns loads of oil there is no stopping inside out rot.

I know there isn't a lot you can do from the inside, but considering it's the original exhaust (8 years old) I would think the external rust over the past 4 months is currently the biggest threat.

I'll fit my fenda and get some paint to sort it out, over xmas, got a couple weeks off Thumbs Up
