I've been flogging a few Wii Fits this Crimbo on eBay and have had the payments from paypal put "On Hold". This means that the buyer has paid through paypal already but paypal have decided it is a high risk item and are holding the money Shocked This happened on two Wii Fits I sold.

The money will only be released to me when the buyer either leaves positive feedback or 21 days pass and no dispute has been raised.

I couldn't fooking believe it - to quote Siggi "Scum, filth and vermin". They hold my money and make interest on it while the buyer holds me to ransom.

Make sure you send it via a trackable service to cover your own back.

Now on further reading on the 'net there is a way around this.

If the payment is put on hold issue a refund for 1p, this completes the payment and the money is available to withdraw/spend etc.

Are eBay/Paypal deliberately trying to do themselves out of business?

Unbelievable.

I like the convenience of Paypal, but some of their recent policies have made me think twice about using them, especially the dispute system.

Funnily enough, payments will only be put on hold if you have below 100 feedback (and/or some other requirements) and this last transaction will take me to 100 Laughing

I think they need to be closely regulated by the FSA but as they are not a bank the FSA has no jurisdiction over them.

Crazy.

Edit : It seems they have become a bank but are based in Luxembourg and as such are regulated by the Commission de Surveillance du Secteur Financier (CSSF), the Luxembourg equivalent of the FSA.

Ebay/Paypal are pretty close to self destructing due to greediness and lack of regulation, both internal and external. There is nigh on protection for sellers these days. On ebay the phrase "The customer is always right" just does not apply.

I am seriously disenchanted with the whole shabang and if there was viable competition I would be there immediately, but other than a car boot there is nowhere to sell anything with a huge target market. Sad

Actually they do adhere to the FSA's codes, and as such you can take a claim to the financial ombudsman service if you ever have a dispute with them.

I sold some muse memoribilia for a friend a few weeks ago. Most of it was from 10-15 years ago and some of it signed (with certificates to prove its real etc)

I had a limitation put on my account and was asked to provide all sorts of details to prove who I was, my address etc.

Faxed bank statements and phone bills for proof as well as my driving licence and passport.

Next day I'm asked to prove the inventory. I.E reciepts of where I obtained the goods. I emailed and told them it was for a friend and some of the cd's were over 10 years old. Tough they said, no proof no money.

I've now had my ebay account banned and my paypal account locked. I can recover my £600 in 180 days. WTF is all that about???

I have no idea what to do about it, they seem to be able to do what ever the fuck they want. The moneys not even mine ffs, its my friends.

Initiate a small-claims suit against them. Costs you just £40, costs them £200 just to field the first stage. And they have to reimburse you your £40 when they lose.

I've only ever used ebay to sell vehicles, compared to the totally useless "service" you get from the rip off that is Biketrader it's reasonable value, at least the final fees are capped.

I've never bother using it to sell small items, maybe twice. Just tonight I decided to finally list some items, it told me I now HAVE to take paypal as payment because i'm a high risk seller or something. I've got nearly 70 feedback, 100% positive and been verified blah blah blah etc for about 6years, total pisstake.

I setup my paypal account to receive payments and looked at what the fees are to receive money. Ebay take 8.5% of the final bid when the item is sold, then decreasing percentages of amounts over £30 etc, then Paypal take 3.4% of the entire price paid including postage costs plus a flat 20p. They are the same company charging you twice a percentage on your sales. Several of the items I was going to sell would probably only fetch 99p, so at £3 postage I worked it out as about 47p in fees to ebay and paypal(ebay) so for the time, hassle and annoyance, pain in the arse that is ebay I gain 53p!

Not to mention the funds will be 'held' by paypal for 21days or until positive feedback is given, or the buyer can just get his money back and claim it never arrived and I lose to a scammer, no questions asked.

All I could think when I was going through all this tonight was what Siggi would be saying, criminal, thieving vermin, should be lined up and shot. They really do need regulating ebay/paypal, they just make the rules up as they go and answer to nobody, it's a total farce.

When you see how much fraud is commited via Pay Pal you will understand why they do this.

If you are a honest and above board seller you will have no problem and get your cash.
Sadly too many scum on ebay selling products they do not have.

Lets face it you took a chance to make a fast buck...

Some people would say you are nothing but the scum of the earth by buying up some wii fit boards as they were in short supply and then sell them on at a profit..... So having to wait 21 days for your money is some form of justice Wink

Laughing Scum of the earth for taking advantage of basic supply and demand? I think that kind of insult should be reserved for people such as paedophiles, not people selling a few things on eBay.

What's the matter? Mummy not get you a Wii Fit for Christmas? Wink

Paypal have no business in holding my money. I fulfilled my part of the deal. If people take the risk and buy on eBay and get scammed then tough. Usually they buy from there to save money. If they want no risk then buy from a shop but be prepared to pay a premium for that security.

Paypal tried to sting me out of £500 when i sold a computer with a warranty, the guy who bought it said it "turned" faulty after 10 days and wanted a refund plus his costs to return the computer.

My response pointed him to the sale description showing the warranty in the sale and he had the receipt. He said I must have known it was faulty, he was told in no uncertain terms to stop taking the piss as a you cannot read a crystal ball or use sticky back plastic to keep a computer going and to contact the supplier.

As he had not left me feedback he lodged a dispute with paypal whop frooze my account and kept my money! Evil or Very Mad

cue many emails back and forth telling the guy to man up and get it repaired, in the end I lost my rag and threatened paypal with legal action. Didnt take any notice.

They asked me to wait 30 days and then settled in my favour???

F3cking piss takers. I use ebay but not as a seller anymore Amazon has most things cheaper if you keep looking. Most of the time ebay is more expensive than shops Shocked

remember when the 360 came out? Pcworld were selling 20gb harddrives for £60 and people on ebay were selling for £70 + postage! they were flying out the window.

Some people are muppets.

Put the boot on the other foot and how would you feel as a buyer and you got scammed.
As PP are a bank and as such fall under the FSA they have to provide a certain level of security. This is how they do it.....

Is waiting 21 days such a hardship, when the money you are making is off other peoples greed to have the must have's.
Personally i would go without than pay a inflated price and take a chance on being scammed.

You may have fulfilled your part of the deal, but how are PP to know that, untill the buyer fulfills their side of the sale, or the 21 days are up...... Like i tell many a person, we aint got a crystal ball......
To be honest if you don't like the way PP work then stop using them.
Plenty of other payment providers out there.

I can appreciate why they do it, although half the time they end up aiding the fraudster.

About 3/4 times I've bought non-tangible goods they have managed to scam me, all the while Paypal claims to protect buyers.

Then a few times I've sold, I've been scammed, all the while Paypal claims to protect sellers.

This is why I just don't bother with Paypal anymore :p
