 Posted: 22:27 - 09 Dec 2008 Post subject: Yamaha DT175 Oil type confusion |
 |
|
I just bought my wife a Yamaha DT175 at the end of November. This is a 2-stroke engine, and I am confused as to which type of oil should I use in the engine/gearbox. It has a separate container for the 2-stroke oil, and the engine has its place for the engine oil. I have no owner's manual, and no Workshop manual, and want to know which oil goes where. The previous owner told me that it must have 2-stroke oil in the 2-stroke conainer and in the engine.
I was under the impression that the engine should use normal multigrade engine oil in the engine/gearbox, and only 2-stroke oil in the container. I rode the bike on the highway full throttle (a massive 110Km/h for about 80km, with the 2-stroke oil in it.The engine has a knocking sound too, and I am not happy about it.
Should I drain the 2-stroke oil from the engine, or will it run fine on it as it currently is? Where can I get a workshop manual and owners manual for the bike, as I have searched all the links and pages of BCF but none is available for this bike. I need to keep the wife happy
Will the knocking sound go away with the right oil, or did the 2-stroke oil have caused the engine damage? |

2 stroke oil is not a multi grade(normally) which means as it gets hotter it also gets thinner. it's not designed for use in the gearbox but
I wouldn't have thought you'd have killed it in that short a time. So warm the motor up to thin the oil and refill with some cheap oil let it run till warm again and drop that oil as well just to flush out the remaining 2 stroke oil that would still be in the box. After that refill with the correct type oil. Most cheap multi grade car oil should be fine. None of the synthetic modern stuff mind unless it's designed for wet clutches.
What I would suggest is when you drain the oil thats in it now. Drain it into a clean container and look to see how many metallic particles are in it as they can hint at whats causing the noise.
I'm not sure as it's been a long time since I played with a DT175 but on the kick start side engine casing is there a 10mm head bolt with a screw driver slot in it that you remove with the bike level and fill till you see the oil coming out of the screw hole? if not it will be either a sight glass marked with high and low lines or a normal dip stick on the filler cap.
See how you get on if the noise is still bad..it's strip down time. If it is then can you take a vid of it on your phone and post it on you tube so we can have a listen
