hi everybody, i've been paying my car insurance by instalments, paid by direct debit. Earlier this month my bank didn't pay an instalment(they charged me £8 for this)
the credit company then charged me £25 on top of the instalment of £24 because i hadn't paid.
i was unable to pay any of this due to having absolutely no money, i received a letter from the credit company on christmas eve telling me i had to set up a new direct debit before december 31 or they could cancel my insurance. I should explain that i got my bank account frozen last week because i was so overdrawn(most of it was bank charges)
my question is do i have to pay by direct debit,i have a letter from the credit company implying this and what sort of penalty would i get if i cancel my insurance. thanks in advance,

Quite simple really, either pay it or they will cancel it for you. Of course you will need to find out what the cancelation terms are, as you may end up owing money to the insurance company as well as the credit company.

You need to start talking to both the bank and the credit co.
I guess as the bank have frozen the account this is not the 1st time you have been in this situation.

i went to the CAB and they suggested getting my account frozen because i had zero money going into it. it is the first time i've been in this situation.
i was given some money at xmas, so i could get a relative to pay by cheque for me, but does it have to be by direct debit?

I wouldn't have thought so, as long as they get their money they don't care.

I am not a finacial boffin or anything but unless you have kids or what not then why not sell your bike/car. You obviously don't need it for a job and it is costing you unessecary money.

Talk to the credit co and see if they will take other payment methods.
Just don't give them your, or anyone else's debit/credit card numbers.
Also have a nice talk with the bank, if it really is the 1st time they may agree to waive the fee's, or at least some of them. You will have to talk really nicely and grovel a bit.
Also sort out getting some money into the account fast to get it back in the black.
I would also agree with Matt, get rid of something you don't really need till you get a regular income and can afford to pay for it.
