Has anyone on here had experience of owning/training deaf dogs?
We just got a new puppy and unfortunately he is deaf. We have never dealt with a deaf dog before and i was wondering if anyone her could relay how difficult it is to to live with a deaf dog.

I don't think he will be very big as he is a cross between a dachsund and a jack russel - so i dont know if the vibrating collars you can buy will be suitable for him. Our worry is that we will never be able to let him off the lead when we take him for walks in the park and that he will need constant supervision as he wont be able to hear us calling for him (always, not just when he is a puppy).

Is the deafness easy to get on with or are we going to have our work cut out? Doesnt matter either way as we are not giving him up, but would like to get a realistic view of the amount of work he is going to be.

Cheers Guys,

Kaben

Dalmations have inherant problems with deafness, so it may be worth trying any related websites for advice as clearly there'll be lots of experience there.

In the meantime there's this article that may be of interest!

may not be deaf

girl i used to work with got a labradoodle, one of its siblings was deaf so being a kindly soul she volunteered to take the deaf one too as it was going free, about a month later it was obvious it was not deaf, must have had ear trouble or fluid blockage

Ok, I'll play.

My mate had a kitten that was 'blind', used to wander along swinging its head side to side and bumping into things.

Little runty thing but quite sweet.

After about a year it (as andy found) made a fair recovery sight wise, and it was obviously a mental problem.

Could be the same Neutral

I know its a different animal but my mate has a cat that is deaf, it seems fine most the time, only thing is you gotta be careful round it when its a sleep cause you terrify it if you wake it up as it has no idea you were coming, and it tends to lash out.

We were going to go for Bollock Chops Wink
Somehow he got named Texas ( i dont know why, i was not present at the naming).

Good news though, he is not totally deaf and does respond to certain tones. Unfortunately these are really high girly notes so i may never actually take him out in public myself Laughing

Cheers for all the suggested readng, some really good stuff there.

Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

LOL.

I was trying to teach my 6 month old grandson to say"shitypunto" (because his mum has a shity fiat punto that keeps breaking down and I have to keep fixing) but in a ninja way ...........SHITIPUNTO

Sadly she was not amused. Nor would I be if I had a shity punto.

Gundog whistle Thumbs Up Not expensive, nice and high pitched, good over a distance and you won't look like a girl, just a country bumpkin Wink

I use a 210 pitch for my dogs with the different number and length of whistle 'pips' for different commands. Easier than I'm making it sound Embarassed
