Did look quite damp in places too. I think the bike may had been closer in more dry conditions especially at a place like Cadwell with all the over hanging trees.

So if it's losing nitrogen, do you have to go to a dealer to get your tyres pumped up Laughing

That is the first decent bike & car review I've seen.

At least they took the damp track into context, Fifth Gear wouldn't even bring that fact up and boast on the cars faster times Rolling Eyes

Thats what I thought, a quite fair and balanced perspective especially coming from a car website.

Overall, I think deep down I'd want the GTR.

good video. i found it funny, not too informative but also fair. both are so damn cool and it shows how good that car is. i don't know if the driver is a good car driver, but he was abit fat. the biker was awesome to my untrained eyes too

Was it just me that knew the GTR was going to win? Not because of the rider or driver, but because the car is just too awesome.

That's the thing with Top Gear that gets to me. Sometimes you don't actually know if Jeremy is mucking about or if he's telling the truth.
I don't see any reason for nitrogen being used. Last time I checked air wasn't a particularly unreliable gas. You don't see it exploding a lot Wink

they've used Nitrogen in racing for years. Air is a mixture of gases (although predominately Nitrogen) so each gas has different characteristics, whereas pure Nitrogen is more contigious.

I think everyone is right who noted the cars awesomeness and the conditions, the amount of computerised functions in that car (traction control etc) it would quite easily win on a surface that wasn't 100% (eg. damp).

good vid Thumbs Up

He was surprised that an R500 beat a Hypermotard.

And from that point on his opinion was void.

The GTR does use nitrogen in it's tyres. It reacts less to the temperature changes or something apparently.

@ MarkJ

Rob Hoyles is a club/national level racer, he's a bit good on a bike. Don't know how good the other guy was in a car though. Were they of similar abilities?

BTW the R500 will obviously beat the hypermotard. The whole reason it's fast is because it weighs nothing the same way a bike does. The best of both worlds, light weight and 4 contact points.

Ever looked in your bikes handbook molotov? It generally states that you must check your tyre's pressure when the tyres are cold Wink

Nitrogen doesn't get affected by temperature (or no where near as much) so the pressure is constant and doesn't change. Thus more predictable handling and you know from as soon as your tyres are warm then the handling will stay that way. Not fluctuate depending on your tyres air temperature.

so if car tyres are inflated to the correct amount when cold, after an hour or so of driving around quite swiftly on country lanes would the tyres handle less well than when cold? or wouldnt it really make a difference.

only reason i ask is that i went out in the car last week, did a couple hours on the motorway then went through some country lanes and in the last 5 minutes on the way back to the house i understeered slightly round a roundabout and locked the brakes a little coming to a stop.

would this be because of the tyres heating up? i had broken more heavily earlier in the day and had no problems with locking up. which is why i ask.

Too many other varibles, but it could have been a factor.

As Big_Ham said, there are to many variables.

A lot of people think that the warmer the tyres are, the more grip they provide. Well that isn't nessecarily true, tyres have an optimum working temperature. If they get too hot then they will wear quicker but they will also 'fold' and give way when cornering, thus not providing as much grip.

Its the same way as people think that on a really really hot summers day that the roads will be really grippy. Which maybe true but be careful when giving it the beans on tarmac, as it gets very hot, starts to melt and gets soft and can give way (i had a lowside because of this on a roundabout).

Notice the Noob mistake at the beginning? He called it a Skyline, Nissan never have and have always stated the GT-R is not a Skyline.

Didn't expect the bike to win on a twisty circuit . . . and it didn't. Mr. Green

No brainer to be honest, the car was always going to win, even in the dry.
