Torches

I need a decent torch for dogwalking more than anything. I like to walk the dog in places with no streetlighting, fields, abandoned power station etc, but my AA Maglite is, well, sh1t.

Anyone know of a torch with a decent beam? Brightness and distance. Are the large Maglites any good?

Get one of the huge maglights. Excellent beam and handy bur blugeoning people with. Not cheap though. Ive had mine 7 years without fault.

maglites are pricey as they are designed to be dropped and the big ones can be used as rather vicious truncheons, that and the premium brand

i doubt they will be able to beat the energy capacity of a rechargeable lead acid battery like the one above, or have the light output,

Going by those, the D cell battery life is considerably better, 10 hours instead of 5, and they are a bit brighter as well. Heavier though so might get tedious carrying it. Going to get through batteries like nobodies business as well, so rechargeable batts essential.

With the 6 cell, you can also batter people with it.

I like maglites, because you can get all the filters for them very easily. I.e. walking a dog at night, get a red filter and it won't destroy your night vision.

Want a light you can use to club an attacker with, get a D cell maglite. If you want a bright light, get a surefire, that said, surefires are almost indestructible anyway.

You should get yourself a head torch, that way you can hold the dog lead, poop bags, etc and still have full light ahead of you

My OH works over in Iraq where it is pitch black when walking to toilet and stuff, he has a Petzl head torch. They all use them. Last ages, very tough and durable. It is the only thing he can use to see a good distance in front of him, (useful for you as you are walking dog alone)? Mind you, you're a tough guy who can take care of himself, eh?
It also has a flip lense thing on it so you c an vary the light from full on beam to see far ahead, or filtered so you can only see a short way, ie close to dog etc...

I buy torches for a major UK retailer so get to play with most brands, domestic and far east.

As far as maglites go, bang for buck, they're well below par. Their only saving grace is the build quality and lifetime guarantee. Their move to LED was 12 months too late and even now they're struggling to keep up with generic FE equivalents.

You're probably better off with a decent LED headtorch for your needs, if you can find anything with either a CREE or Luxeon LED chip, in terms of brightness and throw they're unsurpassed in the domestic market.

Thumbs up go to LED Lenser, a german company (but you pay the price) or Fenix (HK based and cheaper)

Another vote for LED Lenser. I bought one for the missus to use on The Job and she loves it. Variable focus, extremely bright, long battery time and can double as a compliance tool if required. Compact and fits nicely on a belt. I think it cost me about £35-40, and worth every penny.

Maplin do a LED head torch with a Luxeon emitter for £15, which is really bloody bright and at daylight temperatures, not bluer like most 'white' LED's.

Maglite are crap compared to the newer torches. I have a 4D cell with LED upgrade and also have a INOVA T4 Rechargeable and it blows the Maglite away. They are not cheap but quality never is.

How about a cheap plastic torch that takes 2 or 4 D cells.

You'll get plenty of light, they cost pennies, weigh nothing, and have a handle, which is nicer than holding the torch body.

Not a fan of maglites, had a couple. Seem to be a bit like zippos, you pay a lot more for the name, but it does the same as a normal torch, weighs a lot more and has a guarantee you'll never use.

Sounds like you don't really need to be carrying a baton anyway. You have a dog there.
