internet/xbox help

hi, i have set up an ethernet bridge between my laptop, xbox and router. It worked fine, for a few minutes but i had to go out so i turned it off. Came back to it today, and moved the whole setup downstair, (router upstairs) now i did everything the same but it cant find an IP address on the test connection, no matter what i try. BUT i can happily browse the net on my laptop.

Now, i move the whole set-up, exactly the same, back upstairs, and now no matter what i try i cant get an internet connection when i put the xbox-laptop ethernet cable in. BUT the strange thing is the IP address is now found.

So, upstairs = Ip address and no internet connection.
downstairs = no Ip address but perfect internet connection.
Both up and down stairs set up exactly the same way.
whats going on/?

have you set the connection up to obtain an IP address automatically? and the DNS server?

If you wanted your xbox/Laptop ICS connection to have a static ip address then (I presume you mean you connect the laptop wirelessly to the router and then plug an ethernet cable into the laptop and the back of your 360?) go to Control Panel > Network Connections > right click on Wireless Connection 1 (or whatever you called it) > then properties > double click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and use the "use this IP address" and "use this DNS server" settings. The default gateway is the router. So this is usually either 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.0. The IP address can be anything from 192.168.1.3 to 192.168.1.254. For arguments sake use 192.168.1.10. For the DNS setting put exactly what you put for your default gateway.
