The next step will be "safety conscious" people will say you should forgo asssistance if you crash even if you're wearing safety gear because you take the unnecessary risk of riding a motorcyle on the road when you could be much safer in a car or on public transport.

Suicide was illegal in the uk until about 50 years ago, and still is in many countries. It's the same principle.

That's not to say I entirely agree with cumpulsory helmet law.

I very much do. Thing is nearly everyone on this forum is at least educated to the point they can read & write. They can make their own informed decisions, but when you get people who have never had any schooling in anything, never mind how to ride and believe in magic inside helmets you have to protect them*. Education would be the best way but enforced safety standards is a good second.




*that's not just the Nigerians in the article, but half the chavs in this country too.

Not that i have anything against not wearing a helmet! in some circumstances!! They are doing it for the safety of road users. This is because the "average individual" is lacking in common sense to realise that if you crash its quite likely you will hit your head and without a helmet the injuries are multiplied.

Why do you think that they are not harming anyone else! You accidently hit a biker without a helmet and they die through head injuries, how would you feel? Rolling Eyes Not forgetting that you could end up in court over causing death by dangerous driving!

Its up to, but it is your choice whether to break a law which is their for a reason! Very Happy

Was in Uganda a couple of years ag, never saw a crash helmet, saw loads of nutters. Plus lots of three or four up. This made me smile and I suppose is some protection for the head:

Wearing a helmet is a must. Wearing gloves, proper boots and either leathers or textiles is common sense.

No-one should forgo assistance if they crash regardless of what they are or aren't wearing. Should someone crash wearing shorts and a t-shirt I'd like to think that the experience, if not the scars, would point them in the direction of the nearest Hein Gericke or similar shop/dealer...thus they'd have learned their lesson.

To turn up at the scene of an accident, see someone lying there in obvious pain minus several layers of skin and to then walk away purely because they weren't wearing the correct clothing is just wrong on every level.

If I'm honest I'm not even sure that a helmet should be legal. If people want to ride without one let them. It's stupid granted, but we should have the choice. Just like we have the choice to ride bikes.

I have scraped the carnage from off my brain bucket since ever I threw a leg ower a m/cycle.
I have had a 1" drive beetle almost blind me in a head on collision.
Why would I not wish to hide behind the comfort of a nice cosy helmet?
You can also pipe in cool R&B or some Jimmy Shand Hiphop without all that wind and traffic boom. Smile

I was run over by an off-duty trainee ambulance driver. She hadnt checked her wing mirror before turning right straight in front of me.

After I had rolled over her bonnet and picked myself off the floor, I could hear her telling bystanders that I wasnt even wearing proper gear.

Actually I was is full cordura armoured textiles with boots and helmet. To her it was just a black jacket and trousers.

If you started not treating people on the basis of their gear, and I had been in a serious accident, she would have not treated me due to her lack of knowledge about bike gear.

Having worked in that god forsaken dump of a country (Nigeria not UK I mean) I can assure you all that those bike taxis are the most frightening thing I have ever seen on roads. They don't care which side of the road they are on, don't care how they drive with passengers and most have never passes any sort of test in their lives Shocked
Mind you, the authorities over there don't give a toss about people either, it's just about making money and now the police have another way to get bribes out of the people.

If you allow someone access to a dangerous device you do have the duty to educate or protect the person as best you can. To take it to extremes... if i were to hand a gun to someone who'd never handled one in their lives, never seen the damage they could cause and never been educated to the point they had gained a sound grasp of cognitive reasoning, they'd most likely shoot themselves, or someone else, and it'd be my fault.

In the case of the Nigerian government they can't afford to educate so they have to protect with a very sensible law.

As for being a safety nazi... I've broken most of the bones in my body in one stupid accident or another - including trying to do a forward flip off a see-saw - but I'm educated enough to know better and so it's my own stupid fault.

I worked there in Benin City (The Cradle of Humanity as it said on the sign. Rolling Eyes ) I remember driving round one of the large and busy round-a-bouts there and noticed a suited gent (complete with atta-che case and knees sticking out at 180 Deg.) astride a wee 125 Taxi-bike Just a moment later he was 'thrown to the floor' when the driver over cooked it on the wet road surface.
The gent got up off the road and proceeded to beat seven colours of shite out the wee driver.... It was funny but sad at the same time.
BTW a builder's hard hat is just as good as an approved crash helmet in Nigeria. Thumbs Up
