put on their bikes, to keep their hands warm... where do you get them? And what are they actually called?

I have a friend who would like them for his GN125.

What other options are there?

Handle bar muffs. I got a pair of Motrax ones off ebay. They really do help keep your hands warm by cutting the wind chill to nothing.

Motrax, Oxford and other less know brands all do similar versions.

The ones that are made out of fabric are bar muffs, the hand guards are generally called hand guards, brush guards, bark busters etc.

These are my brushguards after my journey home last night. That is ice which would have been on my hands if they weren't there. They make a big difference alone, but they also help when using muffs as they stop them blowing onto the brake and clutch lever at speed which is a problem I've had in the past.

These are me muffs. I hate them and probably only use them a few times a year. Please note the lining is made from Bet Lynches old coats.

Got hand guards on the GS and also heated grips and never need to stop using my summer gloves.

Can't get on with Muffs, tried them then binned them.

Couple of winters ago i used to park next to a maurader with some ghetto hand guards. 4pint plastic milk bottles cut in half then duck taped to the handle bars. Looked ridiculous but no doubt did the job. Cost = bout 2quid with some free milk Smile
