My Mum wants to buy a laptop, she would need to connect it to my sisters wireless connection which is already set up in there house.
But basically she just wants it for very basic internet browsing and sending the odd email.
So she just wants something as basic and cheap as possible (she's only just mastered how to send text messages Smile ) But nothing too crap thats gonna be a pain in the arse.

Where would be a good place to get one from PC world? supermarket?
anybody have any good links Karma

If you're not bothered about buying new I'm about sell an Acer Travelmate 2200, 2.4Ghz built in Wifi is ideal as a laptop to use at home instead of a desktop PC as the battery life isn't great due to the 17" screen and big CPU.

Get a netbook then. Acer Aspire One in tesco is 179 quid. Comes with linux but they've set it up so any fool can use it quite easily.

It'll do exactly what she wants it to do and doesn't cost a lot.

+1

I got the linux one for the missus, then put winxp on it. Really easy to do if you have a pen drive.

Thanks for the advice.

Phoenix, yeah I think she wants a new one but cheers for the offer Thumbs Up

I think a netbook would be perfect for what she wants as she wouldn't use most of the features on a laptop anyway.
She's going to have a look at one when she's next in town, she's a bit worried the keyboard mightl be too small (the last thing she typed on was a typewriter Smile )

Remember, the netbook can always have an external keyboard from about £5, though still got a diddy screen.
I've got a Dell laptop at work that cost something like £250, unfortunately I think it was an offer that's no longer on.
Seems a decent enough machine considering the price; quite 'plasticy', but does the job.

HP Minis are the best of the current netbook crop at the moment (The keyboard is far superior to anything else out there + much better materials) but they have a bit of a premium on the price over most of the alternatives.

I found her a Toshiba A300D-13X laptop in the end for £249.
It was the last one they had at PC world because apparently a newer model has just come out.
On the PC world site its priced at £349 and on other sites they still seem to be over £400, So I'm not sure why it was only £249 Confused

A netbook would have been fine for what she wanted but the Toshiba was only 50 quid more then most of the basic netbooks and the spec is a lot better, so I though it was worth the extra even if its just for the better screen and DVD drive.
