Hi

Where I live we are on an ADSL enabled exchange, which is unfortunately too far away, and the cable companies stopped about a mile away so we are stuck at the moment with 56K modems or paying a fortune for satellite.

Anyway I just read that the range of ADSL from the exchange is being increased to 6km from June.

Anyone know anything about this? Is this just extended ADSL (i.e., 128k if you are lucky, and no performance guarantee)

All the best

Keith

I should think it'll be a reduced 128k service, but either way, I'd go with ADSL, not cable (Which is lucky, you can't get it), as its lower latency, meaning quicker loads/lower pings (whereas cable is higher latency, as its shared bandwidth)

On a lighter note, my monitor is officially buggered, gone all blue. Anyone know anywhere online besides pricewatch.co.uk, where I could get a new, cheap one?

Hi

We have seriously considered it. Down side is the cost. It will be between £60 and £100 a month, with an installation cost of between £600 and £1000.

If we do go for this then there is the down side of response times. On the other hand we can get a 2meg connection, and we would set up a wireless lan with a couple of the neighbours so share the connection and the costs (which might get us a £700 rebate from the government for providing rural broadband services)

Before we went to Aus for 3 months in 1996 the local cable company said they would be out to out area by the end of the year. When we got back at the end of the year they had no plans to come out to our village

All the best

Jimbo he's just said he cant get a cable modem!! I would suggest either waiting for Cable/Adsl connections to be available in your area or to try looking for a relativley cheap satallite service.
Being stuck on a 56k modem sucks Confused

speak to Bt about getting RADSL see if that is available, might cost a bit more than usual tho Rolling Eyes i think RADSL extends to 6KMS or a tad more but would need to check for definate. If they say they are expanding it that could mean RADSL or the new service which is mid band (128K) which i think can be expanded over the 5.5KM limit

Have you done the 17070 test, or did you try to order ADSL and they refused saying it was too far?

if you keep trying then they might let you on! its just theoratically after 5.5KM the signal starts to degrade, it wouldnt affect performance noticeably a couple of KB's a second lower download and a tad higher latency, but its whether they will be kind enough to do it.
Although i have heard some people having a hard time if they are smack on the limit of 5.5KM for the service Crying or Very sad

Oh one thing as for cable modems latency its not any higher than adsl, i get lower pings than my friend who has bt openworld (adsl) in every game ive played its also very reliable, i would recommend getting a cable modem *if* they ever get around to offering them in your area!!

AFAIK, ADSL has a fixed contention ratio, and it was cable who had a variable one.

Cable does definately seem to have the best deals out there (in terms of price/potential-performance ratio), and the 2meg connection sounds interesting...

I'm still being tempted by Internet Central's 2mb ADSL, though it's now £48 ish pm I think.

Hi

That is probably what they are talking about. We will have to ring them again and find out. When ADSL first came to this exchange we were listed as being eligable for extended ADSL, but that soon disappeared (suspect someone asked for it and they surveyed the lines)

We have tried them direct in the past, but have only bother to check the web site for the last year or 2

All the best

Keith
