Theres a guy who lives near me who rides with sandals, shorts and a T shirt every time the weather is decent.
This is on a SP1, last year on some Honda trail bike.
He pops wheelies every time he thinks someone is watching, really thinks hes Gods gift etc.....
We had the thread a few days ago about wearing no helmet, and the thread today about the guy who hit a car and had no gloves on Crying or Very sad
Any of you guys do the same ?
Personally i never ride without my gloves, jacket and boots. And mostly wear leather trousers.
I just hate to think what the aftermath would look like after sliding down the road a 80mph with shorts and T shirt.

Mr.E.

Riding without protection is neither clever nor cool- it's the stupidest thing one can do on a bike...well almost Rolling Eyes

The only excuse would be the lack of money to get proper gear...

I have never gone more than 20m without full gear on. Mainly because of the safety aspects, but also it feels weird with-out all my gear on.

If you talk to the various people that have crashed seriously not wearing protection (ie various american 'stunters').. They usually say some thing along the lines of 'I was so stupid, I thought I would be fine and looked cool. I can't believe I was stupid enough to think like that'...
Only happens /after/ the accident though Rolling Eyes

Lack of money definately isn't an excuse especially not on an SP-1.. Confused And if you had no money for proper gear, would u wear t-shirt and shorts...ahm no, you'd wear jeans and a big tough jacket. IMO the government should drop VAT from all bike specific safety gear, like they have for helmets. I mean it's not as if you'd buy a set of race leathers to go play football in, it's only for safety, it'd also drop the stupidly high prices of leathers for more ppl to afford.

Anyway I always wear full gear, only time's i've not is if my trousers are soaked through when i've been caught in rain.

I agree 100%!

And in the long run a country would benefit or at least not lose too much from the pricedrop since bikers are mostly quite well off citizens paying their taxes or youngsters who could be useful for the community for years to come...instead, they get slaughtered on the roads because they lack proper protection Evil or Very Mad

I have plenty of friends riding in plain jeans and casual leather jackets just because they think the proper gear costs too much (even if they could quite easily afford it in theory!).
Its same with the helmets- after getting their first bikes, most people go for the cheapest lids because they want to get on the road quickly... Confused

I normally wear at least the gloves helmet and jacket

if its judt to the town I leave the leather pants off, though I must admit when riding my bike round to the back of my house without gloves and helmet it feels strange but nice as well - still not worth it on the roads

I did however do the tourist thing of no protection appart from a crappy lid on holiday (mind you I can run quicker than the fecking little scooter thing could go Laughing ) but I was well aware if I came off iot was going to smart a bit shall we say!

Fair enough, but there is budget stuff out there...you can get E-approved lids for under £50, leathers for under £150 etc...at the end of the day, most of the expensive stuff is branded and possibly looks better and is more comfortable, but the function would the same. (ok, there might be an issue with CE-approved armour etc, but some cheaper stuff does come with it). If you think about it, a decent casual leather jacket would cost you upwards of £100 (usually) anyway, so prices *can* be reasonable.

Back to the topic - I always wear a lid, gloves, and some sort of upper body protection (jacket or armoured shirt), but usually wear jeans unless I'm going on motorways.
Having ridden around in traffic when it was warm, I can fully understand why some people choose to wear t-shirts and shorts etc, but I personally wouldn't...besides, once you get up to speed it can get a bit chilly Razz

I agree about no VAT on safety wear, being a HGV fitter i don't pay VAT on my workwear as its classed as safety workwear.
The same should apply to bikers, your wearing your gear for your own protection and safety. Wink

The only time i wear minimal gear (helmet and gloves) is when i'm moving the bike around the block, parking up of a night time etc or to the local petrol station thats only around the corner.
All other times i wear full gear including my leather trousers.
Remember most accidents happen locally and on short journeys.
Was only a month ago that i made a quick local trip and while stationary at red lights, some idiot went into the back of me knocking me over.
I'm glad i wore my leather trousers and boots as the bike ended up on my left leg and badly marked my knee cap and boot as i slid down the hill slightly as the lights are on a gradient.
It was only earlier that day in the morning i was sitting at the same traffic lights wearing only my jeans and traininers.
Would of had a hole straight through my jeans by now and would of hurt me little knee. Wink
Makes you think. Smile

When i got my bike i only spent 70quid on a lid. The one i got is british motoracing approved, so you dont need to spend loads to get decent protection!
I would never ride with out jenes, armourd jacket lid and gloves. I went out in just sports trousers insted of jenes and felt so nervious i had to come home to change.

I may be wrong but I think the reason that it's only helmets that are VAT free is because this is the only safety wear that is mandatory by law. If the government was to make gloves, armoured jackets and trousers and boots legal requirements then I think the would automatically become VAT free.

yeah i also agree about the vat issue, i also think that things like gloves should be mandortry,
i wear most the gear (apart from proper trousers), i wear my jeans tho suppose this is because of the price of stuff but i also ride from my girlfriends (where my bikes kept) to mine in my work stuff which aint too clever ie. a fleece!!

Fake or not thats pretty much what you'd look like if your face slid down the road.

All the best

Its been mentioned lots of times, and can be found over in the funnies section.

One thing though... Could you edit that so that it's linked to on a different site,, rather than shown as people read this in front of children, family, bosses, teachers etc Confused
