Some tvs have a hdmi power saving feature could be this ??, leave xbox on and turn the tv off then on again see if it detects the sound

There was a thread a few weeks ago when people said an HDMi cable was an HDMI cable.. That a £15 cable was the same as a £99 cable... This is the reason why...

There are 3 versions of HDMI... 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3..

1,1 was video only
1.2 was video and audio
1.3 was video and audio but also supports advanced features like viera link from Panasonic (were one remote does all)

The versions of HDMI have nothing to do with the cable.

It's a digital signal. If the picture works then the audio will work too. It's not like SCART where there are seperate audio connections.

Don't turn this into an HDMI cable debate, it doesn't need to be one!

The picture works. The cable is fine. It's some kind of misconfiguration at either end. All I can suggest (assuming you've tried all HDMI audio settings on the TV) is that you try another TV and see how that goes.

try this

Code:

Hold the Y button and the R Trigger while your Xbox is loading - which will reboot your xbox - and then it should produce sound.

I don't know the difference between the HD or VGA options really?! I went in and selected the 1080 resolution setting. it did list all sorts of resolutions from 600 upwards so maybe tahts VGA? but I can't work out how to change the settings or anything otehr than changing the resolution.

I tried the Y and trigger thing with no luck

Also tried turning tv on and off no luck.

For some reason if I put Picture in picture on, the tv has no sound either... but sound works fine when on TV.

I guess I'm on the latest xbox update as it would do it automatically?! I've got the new xbox dash so I guess tahts the latest.

I did a bit of reading in the tv manual and it did mention that devices lower than hdmi 1.3 wouldnt support audio??

I thought xbox 360 with hdmi port was fairly recent thing though?! do I need an xbox specific hdmi cable? Confused

as you are seeing all resolutions from 600 up then you are in vga mode NOT hdmi, hence you seeing the 640x480 etc instead of 480/720 etc. If your 360 has a hard drive remove it and turn on the console, let it boot to dash and then plug in the harddrive see if that helps.

Its in vga mode so thinks your tv is basically a monitor hence the no sound as pc monitor dont have speakers (some do but they have seperate audio in jacks)

VGA mode makes sense as I used to have it connected to a PC monitor with xbox VGA lead and seperate audio to a surround system.

I've tried the things you've mentioned but it's still picking up in VGA mode.

When I go into system settings > console > display as I hover over display before clicking on it, it mentions about chanigng HDTV settings etc but when I click display to go into it, there is only "screen resolution, screen format and reference levels"

Sad

All I keep finding on xbox support website is mentions to their own cable which seems to have a HDTV/Av switch on it?? would a normal non-branded HDMI cable work or do you need this xbox 360 specific cable?

not sure what else to say fella, the fault is known and only affects the sound when using hdmi cable. you could try a compleate unplug of hdrive and memory card from 360 then totally disconnect power for 5 mins then reconnect 360 leaving hdrive and memcard out.

I've just plugged it in via the Xbox component HD leads... it picked up straight away and works fine with sound etc at 1080p.

Is the component as good quality as HDMI? is it worth me trying to sort the hdmi sound issues or just settle for component?

cheers for all your help by the way!

When you boot the Xbox with HDMI cable it should recognise this and set it to HD 1080P, if its not this then somethings wrong with the Xbox.

Is this an Xbox with the HDMI out plug in the back right?

It could be a fault with this connection.

another temp fix virtually the same as the other

Code:

Switch on the xbox, then remove the harddisk and plug it in again. The box makes a short reset and afterwards, magically, i get HDMI output in 1080p with sound.

I might try that tomorow... got it all set up on the component cables at the moment, gaming looks exactly the same as with the HDMI cable in really?! so not too worried I guess.

Any idea if the xbox upscales DVD's? I just watched a DVD and I swear it was far greater quality than a normal DVD.. maybe thats just becuase its a full Hd samsung tv though? not sure, just seemed really good quality! Can't wait to get a bluray player!
