Recently I've been feeling really shitty for no reason at all.

I'm normally really happy and energetic, I have been all my life, but over the last couple of months I feel completely drained, even when I'm out with my mates or whatever I feel down on everything. Nothing in my life has changed so I can't think what it might be.

The most annoying bit about it is that it completely deprives me of any motivation (like I should be at 6th form now, and it took me half an hour to work up the effort to write this), which is a bad thing as I have exams next week but just keep thinking what's the point.

I know it's probably just hormones and being a teenager but it seems like it's been going on for a bit too long for that.

Any ideas how to get back on the ball?

Well, As I see it you have three options:

1.) Go to a doctor - This works if the Doc is open minded... he'll prescribe you Prozac and you'll be all good. But you won't quite be the same on Prozac. I would be surprised if your doctor prescribed therapy. Also be aware that it goes on your medical record, and certain types of job can refuse you if you have a 'history of mental illness'. Such as Nursing, apparently.

2.) Suicide - nuff said.

3.) Make a change in your life for the better. Take up a hobby, get laid - something to take your mind off of it. {Edit - as Joe says don't drink or smoke weed to take the pain away... it doesn't always work and often makes things worse Edit}

Not a very good set of choices I'll admit... but its about all there is. I suspect that it will pass. And if it doesnt... well there's always option 1 again.

I gave up weed 6 months ago on new years day.

And I do other drugs about 5 or 6 times a year.

That's the thing though I'm normally really happy and can't see the point in getting down about stuff when at least we're not starving to death pr whatever, that's why I'm a bit pissed off that I feel like this even though there's no reason.

Marjay, suicide is for quitters, and I already get laid and have hobbys, reckon I might go to the Doc in a couple of weeks if it carries on. He's a nutter but a nice guy.

Was that the chinese new year or something??

Maybe you feel this way because you lack goals, something to aim for, so that when you tink to yourself whats the point, you have an answer "well, achieving THIS is the point". Id say given your age this shit is normal, you dont know where you're heading in life and it can get on top of you. At this point, dont go to the docs, because as Marjay said, it will go on your record and you dont want to rely on prozac as a crutch.

Suck it up and bite the bullet, if you feel the same in 6-12 months time, or if you start to think about tieing a noose round your neck or jumping in front of an artic lorry, then maybe you need to talk to someone, but make it close friends and family before the dude in the white coat.

Moonie,

It doesn't matter how little you take drugs every year or how much it still has the same effect on the brain, granted the more you do the worse it can be but I would suggest you cut the shit out full stop - I havn't touched anything for quite some time now and it still buggers me up from time to time seriously !!! Shocked

You mention that you have exams coming up, could it just be that in the back of your mind you might be a bit nervous about it all/putting pressure on yourself to do well etc.

It could just be seasonal depression Laughing seriously it happens.

Try and have a think about if anything could be bothering you no matter how trivial it might be it can have an impact. Thumbs Up

Ghostrider, what I meant was on New years day it had been 6 months since I'd given up.

I reckon you're right, I do need to set myself a goal, as I'm not aiming for anything atm. I'll get thinking.

And nasty, I know it all has an effect, and I ought to give it up, but I'm gonna try sorting it in other ways first, as they are awfully fun and have been a constant factor for a long time.

I have been trying to think what else has made me feel like this and literally nothing has come up, it can't even be the winter as I enjoy it normally.

Its nothing about drugs man, you go through some tough times around your late teens etc. I was in a right state in 6 form first year as i really disliked how my year as planned and run. Things were different for me then, i must admit i can't quite put the finger on the problem but what got me through it was making some small changes often.

Seems to me, that youre starting to reach the point where as a 16/17 year old, you start to realise what life is about. YOu never really know, quite obviously, but theres distinct classes of people, and this is an age/time where decisions are made that can affect your future, and hence the distinct classes of people are seperated.

You know this already of course, you arent thick. So dont think Im talking down to you.

The way I see it, is that, from what I've gathered you have a very "punk" (to be stereotypical) view of life. Why should I do this? There isnt any point? The government is only gonna fuck me over anyway. I'll do what i fucking well like, and you deal with it. ETC.

This is a good mindset to have, in a sense, because it gives you a sense of person. And as I would guess, youre not entirely uncomfortable with who you are (unlike most teenagers, argh identity crisis etc) but are a bit aimless. Well its time to back up the views of life you have, but in a different direction. Maybe you want to be successful in something, yes it may be normal, but being successful can have hundreds of meanings.

Do you want to earn a lot of money? Do you want to simply be happy with your job/career? Do you want to reap benefits off the state? Whatever you want to do, just sit down, dont get all depressed about it and think about what you want to do. What you've got to think is, is it better being someone who refuses to be a sheep, and sits around on the dole...or a sheep with a strong sense of person that earns their moolah, and does what the fuck they want with it?

The sheep gets to afford skydiving.

The one who "sticks it to the man" does nothing, and never will.

A strange way to put it, maybe, but essentially truthful.

It doesnt mean it will happen straight away, and christ, theres no plan to stick to.

But it might give you some aim. What are you good at? You seem very literate for a youngish guy.

Its times like these where you've got to realise that, fucking hell, people have it far worse than I do (you already seem to have a sense of this, but you most definitely arent acting upon it).

You're a young man, so its time to shoulder some responsibility maybe? Admittedly, theres less responsibilty if going down the sixth form/uni route, but all the same...use the systems around you to get to where you want to be.

Unfortunately, it means conforming, which in my mind is the worst thing out of the whole shebang of "growing up". It feels shit to lose that sense of freedom you have. But unfortunately, life goes on.

And you wont do fuck all about it feeling depressed*.

So basically, get your arse in gear mate, find some ambition and/or enthusiasm from somewhere, and dont let little shitty things get you down. As you said...whats the point in things? Well...reverse it. Whats the point in feeling sorry for yourself? Whats the point in NOT being motivated? A large part of this, is laziness. I'm not saying you are. But jumping from the freedom of school/college into a working/career lifestyle is a tough thing in itself.

Just gotta man up, and decide that you're gonna kick the shit out of anything you put your mind to. Thumbs Up

*I know you arent stupid, just wanted to highlight, that if you think this is bad, wait until something bad has actually happened.

Wow. I rambled. Neutral

Fawbish alot of that is true about me, but there are bits I wouldn't agree with.

I know that "sticking it to the man" is gonna get me a council flat and a warrant. That is unless I'm clever about it.

For now what I want to do is get a job and start earning, whilst sticking it to the man. After all, not every employer is an evil corporate bastard.

Generally I find if you really want to screw the system, getting a job or not etc. doesn't make a difference, it's the things you do in your spare time that make the difference.

At the moment I think part of my problem is that I am at 6th form because everyone in my family always expected me to. I am doing my chosen A levels because my teachers expected me to. And I'll go to Uni because my dad and my grandad on the other side expect me to.

Actually what I want to do more than anything in the world with my life is become a motorbike mechanic for a racing team of some kind, but as I have no qualifications, and probably not enough experience for that kind of thing, it's looking unlikely.

I'd like to leave 6th form and get a job, then start training at college next year as a mechanic.

The other problem is that I don't know where I would begin looking at training working on motorbikes geared towards racing. An apprenticeship with no qualifications looks unlikely, and I don't know any courses for it.

Still though I hear where you're coming from on the rest, just wanted to say that I do wanna do something, just not sure what yet.

Cheers Thumbs Up

Seems a very common scenario, was similar for me, I remember feeling fairly down at sixth form stage also, was a very tedious existence. However, returning 3 unclassified grades at A-level was a great way to get the mind focused.

Make your own decisions, never mind what is 'expected' of you. If your heart isn't in it, there is no great point. Your relatives/parents whatever will understand and support your decisions in the end.

Quals are not the be all and end all, plenty of people on here to testify to that. On the other hand, plenty of people on here to testify that regardless of courses, university can be a great life experience. So make the decision for yourself and nobody else.

Dude - enough of the teenage angst already! You are young, you claim you have mates and you get laid, you have a bike, you are still in school so cant be that dumb. All good! Smile

You say that you cant follow your heart career wise because you dont know of any courses? Well instead of moping round here why not put your googling to better effect elsewhere?

Right now and over the coming years really will be the making of you - you wont be in a better position to do what you want with your life again once relationships/mortgages/kids start to interfere.

I know where you are coming from regards doing what your family expects. When i was at school i took the subjects my dad thought i should over what i was interested in. After school in a fit of rebellion i moved out for a while and bummed around with mates until i was convinced to taking a uni course that i had even less interest in. Never turned up/when i did i was lost and bored which in turn just led to me getting depressed and eventually dropping out.

Eventually i got a job which was just a cut above the mcjobs i'd done previously. I stuck with it and was soon made a supervisor which in turn got me a better paid supervisors role which i have stuck with for the past 8 years. It is not the greatest job but it pays my bills and gives me plenty time to do other things being close to home. I still occasionally look back though and wonder what i might be doing had i had the courge of my convictions when i was younger and gone my own way.

I'm sure that your family only want what they think is best for you but they arent you. If you really want to do something else then stand up for yourself and do it. I'm sure they would be equally happy to see you settled into anything so long as you are focused on it.

So pull your finger out and get on with it! Mr. Green

It's the post 'hawk blues lol.

I reckon I'm gonna tell my family it's time for me to sort myself out and do what I want to do not what they want me to do. Anyone know of any colleges (preferably near oxford but not necessarily) that have a course in motorbike mechanics?

Cheers guys.

Haha.

You're sixteen.

You'll soon be wearing your Kurt Cobain t shirt and not washing your hair.

Teenage angst is fairly common when you are between social roles: no longer a school kid, but not really an adult.

My advice would be, avoid Kurt Cobain t shirts - they make you look a twerp. If you want anything more meaningful than that, you're on your own, kiddo.

I would just say, don't go to the "doctors". Wrong move. Depression isn't a real illness, in spite of what everyone will tell you, so don't start destroying your brain with the zombie pills. Doctors know how to treat medical problems - herpes - not social problems such as being lost, confused, etc.

I don't wash my hair as it is, it's less that a millimetre long Wink

My t-shirts tend to be something meaningful, like Crass or Amebix t-shirts with actual (if slightly clichéd) beleifs on them.

cheers for the advice about the docs though, don't think I'm gonna pay him a visit for a while.

Been there done that fella. Lost both my grandads within a year and recently my 28 yr old cousin. Finished school, shit grades, didnt know where i was heading. Felt horrible, one minute i was happy as larry the next moment i could of kicked someones fucking head in. Horrible. Finally decided to get myself to the docs and he done some 'tests' and told me i was rather quite depressed. And suggested i go to some place for youngsters or something, as he was reluctant to put me on meds due to my age. I thought fuck that im not a charity case. How ungrateful of me. Anyway im still rather the same at times although a lot less frequent, passed my theory, and ive got myself a place at college now, start on the 21st, got my driving tests on the 29th and got myself a girlfriend (nearly 8months now). So things are perking up. It may not seem it to you fella, but things will get better, i can almost guarantee it. Anyway ive rambled enough. I hope you find your way, if you need a chat pm me. Take care, rezzin. Thumbs Up x

Sounds like you have a good idea of what is making you feel down. Seems like you are feeling trapped. The good bit is that you are easily young enough to have next to no financial obligations and also plenty of opportunities. The bad bit is that to a large extent everyone has to do things they don't enjoy.

If you are certain about what you want to do (and realistic) then probably go for it. However get plenty of info and realistic ideas of what you can get into. Suspect that if you have a decent plan (for want of a better word) of what you want to do and how you can get to do it then you will probably get some decent support from your parents, while just leaving and hoping will not encourage them to help you.

That said it could well be worth waiting until the end of the college year (likely when most other opportunities turn up, and also means that it doesn't look like you just dropped out of college).

If you are feeling really down and have been for ages with no real change then speak to the docs. Unlikely that they will really try and push you onto medication.

All the best

Keith

The crushing reality of how depressing life is catches us all up eventually, well, if you have half a brain.

It's why everyone envies children.

You're becoming an adult, time to enjoy coasting along... suicide appealing to you yet seeming a waste of all the shit you've already gone through. With the best goal somewhere along the lines of purposelessness being your purpose. To blindly stumble along this horror show... hoping not to get too many kicks... until you finally snuff it.

Yeh. Enjoy Thumbs Up

“Every existing thing is born without reason, prolongs itself out of weakness, and dies by chance.” Jean-Paul Sartre

Many philosophers - i.e. Seneca, Schopenhauer, Tolstoy (at least in his confession) - would argue suicide as a veritible choice. You only see it as a quitters choice because that's what you've been told it is by a society that, for its very functioning, has to live as though "it didn't know".

But I won't argue for the free mans choice of suicide here. I'm just saying, it can be defended on many grounds, and as you age and think more, you'll appreciate this.

Bonny is right in pointing out that life gets worse and worse after the age of, say, 25. School really does have the potential to be the "best years" of your life: sadly, you don't realise this until it's too late. Life is generally disapointment after failure after irritation when you become an adult.

Medication is the quitters choice: if you have doubts, consult writers such as Dr. Breggin (who has shown how "anti depressants" were released onto the market for financial reasons despite dangerous results in test runs) or Dr Szasz, Dr Laing, etc. All of these authors have shown that "mental illness" is a myth and that anti depressents are clinically no more successful than, saty, "pet therapy" or a morning jog.
