PostPosted: 11:45 - 29 Jun 2007    Post subject: Diesel spillage from a bus. Update!!!!!!!!! Reply with quote

I was following a bus yesterday morning on my way to work, it turned left at an island and in the process spilled at least a gallon of diesel leaving a dirty great slippery trail on the island and up the hill.
I took not of the bus number and when i got to work called the bus company that it belonged to.
The phone conversation went something like this...........

me:- "hi ive just followed one of your buses and it was spilling diesel over the road, i believe it was over filled. This sort of splillage is quite dangerous to bikers"

Bus company :- " Yeah these sort of spillages happen, its nothing to worry about plus the rain we are having at the moment will soon wash it away"

I could not believe what i was hearing and to be honest i was so shocked i just said thank you and hung up!
When will lorry, bus van drivers learn that over filling is so bloody dangerous.

Report it to the Police, tell them what they said as its also illegal to overfill tanks. One of the drivers at our work has been fined for just that as he always brimmed his tank every morning and left a slick on the first island outside work. Thumbs Down

^^^^^^^^
What he said.

I'd report it to the Highways department of the local council too. See if they can get it cleaned up. Plus, if some unlucky bugger gets caught out, there's legal recourse.

Report it to the cops and include the registration and time etc, and demand a follow-up. Won't hurt to report it to the environment agency too.

I always report spillages to the cops, done a few this year already.

I think you will find its not that the tank was to full, it's more then likely the cap wasn't on properly.

As many of you know i am a bus driver and we don't fill them up, that responsibility falls on the retarded, foreign shunters and cleaners that cant figure out that the caps need to go on tight.

The amount of times i have had to close the cap when i check the bus over it's ridiculous.

I mean how hard is it to push the cap down and make sure the locking lever clicks into place?

Maybe so but its you responsibility by law to check your vehicle isn't going to be a hazard to other road users.

If you are pulled over for leaving a slick down the road, your the one in trouble not Johnny Foreigner.

HGV caps are by no means, shape or form any good at holding diesel in if filled up the neck to the top no matter how tight the cap is on. There is a hell of allot of weight pushing against it when its going around the corner. Shocked

i must admit i'm a bus driver and i was once pulled over by a motorcyclist to be informed that my bus was leaking diesel. to be honest i was unaware that it was im glad i was told as i could put the bus out of service immediatley and get the engineers out to recover the bus and make good what damage i had done.
Its a shame you couldn't let the driver know of the dangers he was causing.

Sorry finglonga i don't think i wrote that out correctly, i meant that its the shunters responsibility to fill the bus up, and they really are retarded!

This morning i went in to work and i walk past the fuel bay and there they are filling up one of the buses, nothing new there but what do i see?...........the pump hasn't stopped when the tank was full so its now pumping diesel all over the floor Shocked

Do they do anything like push the emergency stop button?

Do they fcuk! they just stood there watching.

It may be their responsibility to fuel the bus up but if its going to pose a danger to other road users or the public.

The pre shift checks should show up that the fuel tank is not sealed properly or over full. The vehicle should not leave the depot until problems are rectified.

If the Police or VOSA pull a defective vehicle then the driver will take the bullet. Seen it happen countless times.

right just to put this straight once and for all, i wasn't saying that its not our responsibility to do a pre-service check when the vehicle goes out on the road.

It was to this that i said it isn't our responsibility.

Bit of an update,
I did as was suggested and called the police regardind the diesel. They for once were very helpful and said that they had several complaints regarding that bus!
I also E mailed the bus company quite a long email complaining about it, ive had a response this morning and it reads......

"Dear Sir,
Thank you for your email regarding the diesel leak, we recieved several complaints from members of the public and the police about this.
The person or persons involved in this error will be dealt with accordingly.
Also can I take this opportunity to apologise for the way your complaint was handled over the telephone"

And the reason i didnt try to get the bus to pull over and tell him about the leak was because last time i tried that move a lorry attempted to run me off the road!
