Complaint Letter to Landlord

Hi,

Does anyone know any good template websites I could use to write a letter of complaint to the landlord?

We have a damp/mould/mushroom field problem developing in one corner of our house - this has been pointed out to him already just after we first moved in - and we have now been living here for over 3 years. Damp/Mould patches have also started to appear at the front of the house in the corners, the rear of the house - one patch in the bathroom and a few patches in the bedroom.

Getting rather fed up of cleaning it all now, and feel that it's about time he put our over extortionate rent price towards something

You can get advice from the landlordzone forums, or Citizens Advice Bureau / Shelter.

Think you'll have to write your own letter though, think most sites charge for templates for that kind of thing.

That looks like condensation damp to me.

Clean it, open the windows occasionally and turn the heating up.

Doesn't damp have spores that are bad for you? Or is it only certain kinds?

I would think that the landlord has some duty to keep the house in a 'fit' state?! 3 years is a long time to have lived with that.

I agree, go to CAB, they will help. They probably hear this kind of thing all the time, and their advice is free, which is always good

As for the letter, cab will guide you, but I would just write down what the problems are in the letter, and print off the photo. If he still doesn't do anything find somewhere else. If his rent is extortianate then surely there are other places you could afford?

I grew up in a damp house with green on the walls and developed some horrible chest probs and was in and out of hospital. My parents moved over it. Then when I got older I moved into a place of my own that was the same, walls where black on one end with damp! again same crap, bad asthmas, chest infections and swollen glands. If I go near anywhere damp I can be garenteed to have illness.

You don't mention if you've spoken to him recently about this. From your first post it sounds like it was pointed out 3 years ago and nothing since. I also take from it that you can't get somewhere else decent locally for the same money, otherwise you would move. It isn't healthy as others have said. If I'm wrong on these assumptions I apologise.

If you have spoken to him (and he doesn't care) then the next step IS a letter but you have to be realistic as to what you can achieve. All you can really do is say you'll give him notice and move out if he doesn't fix it. Otherwise it may be better to address the matter yourself.

I doubt a dehumidifier would solve that anyway. From your picture (if this is the caravan cable you mention) I'd "guess" damps coming through with that cable. If the job done drilling through the wall is of the same standard as the cable tacking to the wall then I'd say this is the culprit - remove it and seal it outside if you feel competant doing so. The only way to get a better idea would be to agree with your neighbour to pull their washing machine out and have a nosey or lift the carpet and floorboards. Quite a bit of work for a tenant but if your landlord isn't going to do it and you won't move then....
