Hi all ,

took my bike to get it's MOT on Saturday - it failed on some minor things!
The garage however is now closed for 3 weeks.
I know a mechanic who works from home who can do the work for me and I was wondering where I stand legally... ... I know I can ride to an MOT centre for the test without a valid MOT certificate but can I ride my bike to his workshop(home garage) to get it fixed for the MOT without a certificate ?

cheers

John

IIRC the only way you can ride a non-MOTed bike on the road is too a pre-booked MOT.

So I would say no technically.

From https://www.ukmot.com/faq.asp :-

Quote:
Cars and motorcycles MUST normally pass an MOT test three years from the date of the first registration and every year after that. You MUST NOT drive a vehicle without an MOT certificate, when it should have one. Driving an unroadworthy vehicle may invalidate your insurance. Exceptionally, you may drive to a pre-arranged test appointment or to a garage for repairs required for the test.

If you have prearranged that the test will take place once the repairs are completed, you'd have to have a complete cunt of a copper to try to do you for no MOT. You'd probably have a problem convincing them that someone's "home workshop" is a "garage" though.

Covered by VERA 1994 Schedule 2 Section 22.

Quote:
(3) Where the relevant certificate is refused on a compulsory test of a vehicle the vehicle is an exempt vehicle when it is being used solely for the purpose of—

(a) delivering it (by previous arrangement for a specified time on a specified date) at a place where relevant work is to be done on it, or

(b) bringing it away from a place where relevant work has been done on it.

I have a print out at home I carry whenever I end up in this position just in case I get stopped.
