Right, some of you may think I'm a devious little sod, but I personally hate hypocrisy. One of my big hates.
So to that end, when I give it 'Yes I really want this job, I won't scarper if I get a better offer' etc, I really don't fancy scarpering.
Sods law though, the moment I get offered a shit job and accept it (which I basically spent the whole interview explaning how I wanted it oh so much), I get told another job (better, closer and more money) want to start interviewing.
I'm sure I'll get this now with every job I applied for, and sods law they'll all clash with work so it'll be very obvious I'm having other interviews.
Anywaym I /know/ the /smart/ thing to do is to take this job, keep scouting for (better, closer) jobs whilst plugging away at this shite one. But it feels really wrong for some reason.
Anyone else get this?
Oh and FYI, I dunno if anyone here is in recruitment, but FFS stop trying to make me tell you the job offer I'm thinking of turning down/walking from after a few days. Especially if when I call you on it you promise 'they'll never know who we're on about'. Oh fucking really.
What I hate is the polite needling, getting more forceful until you eventually say 'Look mate, I wasn't born yesterday, now stop trying to get information out of me', then you feel like it may influence how readily they put you in to interviews.
That said, at least they can vouch on me being half intelligent ____________________ China traffic/travel bike vid - When I make a sweeping statement, please add the word 'statistically' in to the sentence before you bitch...

I suffer quite a bit of job related guilt, if that is what you are getting at? And it shouldn't be like this.
I remember when I was between jobs (matter of days) and phoning around frantically applying for everything under the sun, you'd get an offer from somebody, for something temporary, agree to start monday.
Then a better one would ring you up a day later than they said they would and offer you better/closer more permanent etc. So you do the smart thing and look after number one and agree to the better one and drop the other one.
You have two choices, don't turn up and don't answer you phone or ring them and say sorry but ive had a better offer. Both are shite, both make you feel guilty, and unfortunately if you choose to do the decent thing and ring to cancel them, they will likely give you ear ache for 'wasting their time'. Always the option I chose like an idiot.
Tbh, the whole system (not the hetz/madman oppressive system here) just the general job system, is a mess. You can't apply for one job, and then wait to hear, then conclude business before applying for others, especially if the wolf is at the door. So you inevitably have to be a pain in the arse and fuck people around.
I hate it, but the more people I have dealings with, the more I realise most people are just cunts, so the less I really care.
As for hypocrisy, I used to get pissed off with driver applications messing about when I was working as a supervisor, you'd arrange a bunch of interviews and none would turn up, one or two might call to cancel (as discussed above). Fair play to you if you can sidestep the hypocrisy in the whole thing having been on both sides of the wall.
Spent the past two weeks not being able to walk after nackering my ankle in a work related accident, and spent the entire two weeks feeling guilty about being off work, damned if I can really work out why. ____________________ So in other words, he stopped you for being flagrantly in posession of a motorcycle in direct contravention of the Hippies, Darkies and People Whose Face I Don't Like The Look of (Police Powers) Act. 1976 |

Pretty much nail on the head.
This is a (shit) job I applied for in november, 6 days after getting disposed of by my job.
I've been applying ever since, to far better things. Things I might look forward to doing.
Oh well, I has a start date now. 9am Monday 2nd. Which means catching the 8 o'clock train at the latest. I hate getting up at 7 :'(
Ah well, theres a job going for a place 20 minutes down the road, working in an actual lab. Guess what I'll be jacking in for that. ____________________ China traffic/travel bike vid - When I make a sweeping statement, please add the word 'statistically' in to the sentence before you bitch...

Apply for it?!?!?! Christ, I applied for that in November as well.
They pushed the start date back 3 times for money issues.
What ever happened to 'staff wanted asap' adverts. Fuck me, you're lucky to get in your actual job a month after you apply. Usually it seems to be 2.
I understand those companies struggling with money, but jesus.
And Hetzer, very true. Only positive about this bollocks in London is that it is 100% secure, assuming I can do my job (although being late a fair bit may piss them off, inevitable when commuting unless you leave MASSIVE margins of error).
This one coming up probably isn't, and funnily enough it's at the same place (though not the same company) as my last job, where I got dropped fairly instantly. ____________________ China traffic/travel bike vid - When I make a sweeping statement, please add the word 'statistically' in to the sentence before you bitch...

If they have had to push the start date back a number of times, I would not consider it 100% secure.
I once worked for a firm who kept delaying paying it's staff as they were waiting for 'invoices to be paid'. Yes the owner still insisted in poncing around in a Lexus costing £100 a week in fuel alone!
Needless to say, I left pretty sharpish!
I've learnt to never, ever trust an employer. They will happily screw you over if it keep their arse safe. We've sacked 1/3 of the workforce, yet not a single director or senior manager has gone. Funny that. ____________________ Like a Yorkie - I'm not for the girls |

Small businesses, with a small workforce (such as the welding company my brother works for (16, picked up the apprenticeship in September and does Overtime pretty regularly)) I wouldnt want to fuck around.
usually theyre run by the guy that built the company, and in particular cases (you can tell pretty sharpish!) theyre decent blokes, and a decent workforce.
Thats the only situation I would feel guilty about.
Any other stuff, larger companys....they give no fucking shit about you. Why would they? bad business ethic to look after your employees and genuinely care about them when the shit hits the fan and you need someone to take the flak/save costs on etc
Especially in this climate mate...they dont give a fuck what happens to you, only what you can provide for them.
Read Louise's thread about HG. Large business, but small, more or less independently run stores....and they still dont give a shit about sacking what sounds like two fine employees that made a few small mistakes.
Because most of the time, the people you work with are cunts aswell.
You really could almost come up with a formula for this shit. ____________________ "Oh....it looks like Average Joe's is forfeiting the match!" - "Yeah, its a risky strategy but lets see if it pays off for 'em Cotton." |
