I'm making some chilli vodka. What sort of peppers are good? I can get Bird's Eye from the supermarket, are they OK? How many for a very hot vodka? Red and green or just red? Should I leave the seeds in?

So many questions Very Happy

How hot do you want it?

You can get habaneros at most supermarkets, also sold as Scotch bonnets. They are about the hottest you'll find on regular sale. Birds eyes being the next hottest. Colour depends on your preference for flavour, I personally prefer my chillis ripe.

Whenever I've done it, I pricked the chillis with a pin and put them in a kilner jar which I then topped up with vodka. Left it to sit for a month or two (depends how hot you want it) then decanted it back into the bottle. A wee, red birds-eye chilli left in the bottle reminds you which one is which and looks good.

I have drunk Chilli Vodka in Russia and they make it far too sweet.
Brother Stinky offers good advice although Scotch Bonnets although they are not quite the same as Habaneros ( They are a variety of Hab and have a lovely fruity aroma). Birdseye would be my chilli of choice for the job. For a 75cl bottle of Vodka I would use at least 125 of the things, just pull the stalk off. Drop them in the bottle and leave for a month.
125 birds eye is not a lot, I just had a stir fry containing...
1 scotch bonnet
23 green bird eye
7 red thai chilli
11 green thai chilli
and now have a pleasant burn.
For a real hot Vodka try this..

One drip to 75cl, read the reviews.

the seeds are the hottest bit, so if you are going for hotness, you need to grind them up to release the maximum amount of hotness chemicals into the vodka

if you put a whole chilli in without chopping it up or anything, it wouldnt do much, you need to chop up and grind up to let the hotness out

Actualy the seeds are not quite the hottest bit Colin. The white mass between the seeds is the source of the greatest heat. This protects the seeds from being nibbled by birds etc before they are ready to be nibbled, You will find that generaly green chillis are hotter than ripe red chillis for just this reason.
Upon reflection though I would slit the chillis before dropping then into the bottle.

Just out of interest, what made you guys begin to enjoy eating very hot chillis?

I enjoy hot chilli dishes, and even chillis alone, but I don't seek to incinerate.

Somehow people are obtaining lust for hotter chillis, and I want to know how. Shocked

Remember the first wank you ever had? The scary one that made you think you had broke your winkie, the one that frightened you so much you swore that you would never do it again but of course you did but it never again was that good. That is what it is like with chillis. You sit with your mouth so hot that you dare not breath in more that light wispery breaths knowing that the next morning it is going to do its fiery work a second time. In the morning you spend half a hour on the throne unable to leave for work for fear of crapping yourself and all the time hot chilli fumes play havoc with the crinkly skin of your nut sack... Never again.
By late afternoon all you can think of is chillis you need to get home and feel that burn and only bigger and hotter doses will do but you will never get back to that first time.

Do you mean my pierced penis or riding a rigid framed vintage Ariel up the big hill at Red Marley Colin?

I have to go and give a hours talk to the VMCC about my bike five days before this years race, I do not know which I am most worried about. Mr. Green
