My GSXR 600 being delivered today (hopefully)

I am getting my first BIG bike delivered today (hopefully) so if i get it soon enough i am planning on going to insure it today if everything works out fine and take it out for a ride!

One thing is that i never ridden anything above 125cc, had my Honda NSR125 for 2 years which was fine and did my training and test on CG125/YBR125 so only have experience on those.

I need some advice as i am getting a bit nervous on going for a ride with such a powerful machine.

Any tips/advices?

What model of GSXR? an older SRAD like mine, or a newer one?

Like everything, treat it with the respect it deserves and you will be fine.

It only goes as fast as you twist the grip, but the handling and braking will be in another world compared to your 125.

Be aware of the weight difference too, all these things will help you enjoy it.

But, and most importantly, if it's brand new, it will have brand new tyres, these will need scrubbing in, and on these roads and conditions they can be very, very twitchy.

It's a SRAD 2000 X model, tires are worn so hopefully it will not slide. Seeing the video on youtube called (Brand new GSXR crash) makes me nervous really but i think it was just because of the tires.

I am planning on going around town 30mps or so, so it will be 1st and 2nd gear and 5-6k revs?

If i do get the bike today and go out for a ride i'll add some pictures and tell you guys how it went

There are no hard and fast rules about how you should ride. Just ride how you are comfortable.

Pootling around in 1st and 2ns will make the smallest of throttle inputs very positive. 5000rpm will see you over 30mph in second though

Most of all, relax and enjoy it, get out onto some quiet roads and learn the characteristics of the bike. An empty car park and do some slow stuff, the weight of it may surprise you.

As Davie said the main thing is to respect the bike and be very aware of how much more power you have and don't go thinking you're invincible.

All charchteristics will be massively different to the 125 bikes you've riden apart from the riding position of the NSR.

The power, throttle response, braking, handling and WEIGHT will all be way different. Just take it easy to get used to all the changes and be careful not to be complacent regarding the weight when walking the bike as this is when the EXTRA weight could catch you out.

Don't get flusterred or frustrated if you don't get used to it straight away, be patient and it will come.

Riding an SRAD this time of year is actually not that bad ....

Just make sure that you take things steady, Regards to tyres i had a new set of tyres a few weeks back and decided winter wasnt the best time to scrub them in but its done now and i had no problems.

A few things id make sure of though is if your bike is outside overnight make sure you cover it, Its been rather chilly in norfolk recently and it froze my Choke off so now i wrap a teatowel around the choke lever .

Other important things like make sure you keep that chain lubed up with a good chain lube , And clean your rear shock as often as you can Also lights are often good this time of year so keep em clean uprated bulbs are handy too.

Warm the bike up before razzing off i leave mine to idle for about 5-10 minutes .

As you are a fairly new rider you may have heard about such things as "Chicken Strips" This time of year 99% of riders have them so dont try to be a hero .

Otherwise Have fun keep the rubber side down and enjoy


(Also treat the bike to a thorough clean at weekends if you can and invest in a paddock stand )

im 17 and just done my test (passed ) and am after a big bike. a few months ago my dad let me on his brand new hornet 600!

i shit a brick!

he said to me, just go up the road and back, stay in 1st or 2nd and go slow... pulled off on biteing point, and tapped the throttle and the thing felt like an absolute animal , i quickly changed into 2nd...3rd...and finally 4th.

i found it a much better way to get to grips with a big bike, as in a higher gear, your revs are lower and will not pick up speed anywhere near as quick as it would in 1st or 2nd. it is much easier to control.

but it is totally different cornering and stopping, as like everyone says... the weight is a major factor.

make sure you take it easy especially in this crappy weather!
also remember, change into a higher gear when pulling off, because in this weather, the thing will just wheelspin as i found out not so long ago .

it will come in time, and it wont be long till your throwing it around trying to get your knee down. i often take my dads out now and feel as comfortable on that as i did on my 50.

Well i am working weekends so now i'll have to beg my manager to take half day off and then uni starts on monday so only will have sunday evening to enjoy the bike. Looking at BBC weather it looks like its getting warmer at weeked, at least something good. But i had a reeealy good start of 2009 passing my Test and passing some other really important test for me so hope it goes like this for the whole year

My first ride on anything bigger than a 125 was picking up a 14 year old CB450DX after getting the train to fetch it and riding 60 miles home is the pissing rain on motorways and unfamiliar roads.

Sorry to disagree guys but im with the kid on this 1.

When i bought my SRAD i wanted my first ride to be where i new the roads and generally things like that .

He will feel much safer cruising up road he has ridden on for years as opposed to riding out of the bike shop and not having a clue how the bike is going to ride on a "new to you" road.


Other bonus is you dont have to worry about other people watching as much and if you slip the clutch heavily and generally make a cock up of pulling away there is no
