Learning guitar...

My other half has a guitar and she's frustrated with the progress. Ok she has all but given up, but i know she would love to be able to play.
I think she bought a large book with a CD set but she didnt get on with it that well.

Do you guys have any advice? I dont know anyone closely who i could ask to teach her a little more. So im open to suggestions.

Lastly her guitar strings seem very stiff to acoustics that ive handeled before, seems very hard to play. Is there a problem here or is it just new strings?

What guitar is it? If its the 'strings that came with it' and it cost less than £80 new, I'd get some new ones on there and see if it makes it more playable.

As for tutoring advice, the only thing I reckon that would be REALLY constructive is to attend a few lessons. Don't go mental, just a handful so she can learn the basics without getting frustrated with herself. When she can read chords and has a few under her belt maybe the books would be a better help.

Are lessons expensive?

I've been looking for lessons recently, I want some 'intermediate' lessons at rock and blues guitar, and some beginner ones at classical guitar. Prices seem to be cheaper for beginners, I would say £20 an hour will be the top end of what you'll be paying.

Maybe the strings on the guitar are a little heavy? Don't forget that steel strung acoustics are WAAAY more heavy to play than either nylon stung acoustics or electrics (Unless you're trying a Stevie Ray Vaughn Strat - ouch!).

im doing an intermiedate nite course at the local college £45 for 10 weeks plus it so much better learning with others than on your own
