Well I knew it was stretched and tired but I thought with love and care I could make it last until Tuesday when I have the bike booked in for a service. However, things have turned out differently again...

I felt the chain either slip or jump the sprocket on the M5 just before junction 12 where I get off. Anyway, I eased off kept it going and was gingerly and smoothly opening the throttle when I felt it go.

Clutch in and braked firmly but gently, the chain got caught on the sprocket carrier nuts locking the rear at about 30-40mph and then thankfully shot it out the back.

The nuts are chewed, the metal chain guard I invested in is buckled and warped and the chain looks like this:

Recovery dropped me off at the local Suzuki dealers on the way home and luckily there was still a mechanic in the workshop. We put the bike inside and I'll call them in the morning to see if they can bring the service forward and give me a courtesy bike. Shifty

I think the chain guard has just paid for itself Lee.

Funnily enough Wali, my wife made the same point.

As you may recall I had a split link break on my last bike and the paranoia of it happening on a bigger bike with a fatter chain at a higher speed scared me silly.

Investing the £30 in the metal chain guard was well worth it, though I think the exhaust and maybe the pillion hanger may have caught some of it, I think I would probably have got the rest. Sad

You know, maybe I should stop riding the FZR till I get a new chain...
Pics to follow tommorow.

Glad your OK, must of been unpleasent, though you sound like you where half expecting it. Would be horrible for it to happen out of the blue.

Although I had an eye on it I really thought it would last a bit longer, the last one did 19,000 miles and this one has done 15,000 miles.

I know it's worked a bit harder though as I only did 5,000 miles on the first chain and the original owner did 14,000 miles touring Europe 2-up in the summer.

I've ridden in all weathers for the last 18 months since owning it and though I clean and lube it regularly it's clearly not enough.

I think this winter has been particularly hard on it with the temperature fluctuations and the road salt grinding it's way into it.

I mean short of a Scottoiler just how long can you make a chain last? Is 15,000 miles good? Thinking

Lets hope you got off lightly as far as the wallet goes. I had a chain let go on a trumpet Tiger 955, it split the engine cases open.

Not the finest hour. Glad you're ok.

Glad you are ok mate, it could have been a lot lot worse...
I reckon 15000 miles is pretty good going to be honest, especially on a litre twin like yours.

TBH at the roadside that was my biggest worry as well, so once I'd moved it to a safer place I got my torch out.

That's when I noticed the chewed nuts and buckled guard, I searched for dripping oil/fluids but after half-an-hour there was nothing.

I fully expected the front sprocket cover to be shattered esp. as it's only plastic, but it was fine.

Just got off the phone to the dealer and she said her first thought on seeing my bike already in the workshop was "maybe his chain didn't last so long after all..." Laughing

Anyway, picking up a courtesy bike this afternoon and hoping that the damage has indeed been kept to a minimum.
