I think I can make a play for really really bad journey to work.........
I broke down, not once, not twice, but 4... yes 4 times in an hour!! Each time I was trundelling along in traffic and the next thing the engine would just cut out, no splutter, no cough, just dead, total shut down and then coast to side of road....and as if the bike is trying to kill me it would cut out at the worst places, the best one being at a massive crossroads in salford where trams cross over the box junction and 2 trams are coming my way as i stop in the MIDDLE!! panic ensues.........!

So at the side of the road/tram station etc.. id wait for abit whilst continually trying to get the engine to tick over, get it started.....wait 10mins to make sure its okay, set off again, 5 mins up road bike cuts out, same procedure!! After the 4th time and a convenient breakdown spot in the middle of an industrial estate next to a coffee van, i decide "sod this for a game of soldiers" im phoning the RAC.........phone dies half way through call.......

So lots of eye fluttering ensues at the vauxhall garage near where i break down to let me use their phone to phone RAC. Sorted, have to stand outside in cold waiting as they cant phone me due to mobile being dead, but luckily coffee van supplies with much coffee bounciness so an hour and half passes quickly Smile RAC Guy turns up, decides its my control module (i really thought it was going to be the spark plug or the fact ive had to jolt life into battery 4 times over past week) by just turning it on, hearing it turn on immediately and not dying once but also not knowing what the bike even was (apimula apparently not aprilia) or how to use the ignition button (eeeek!!) so he orders a call-out truck to take me and bike home as the next point i would likely cut-out would be the mancunian way and that would cause mucho havoc!! Several more hours sat on a rock with coffee in the cold and the call-out truck arrives...takes me and bike home, he thinks its the battery or a loose connection and im inclined to go with his view as he actually knew what a bike was, which is rather useful.

Still have to get to work though as already in trouble with my boss for sleeping through the call-out phone call at 3.40am (oops) so I have to show face, its 2pm at this point. Have to get bus (typically late) to the "park and ride" to "steal" my own car back from tram station so i can pick up the battery i had on order to pick up today, and whilst driving into work, the bloody black merc infront of me decides to u-turn whilst driving at 40mph, I slam on the breaks, and lock them up whilst swerving to avoid the back end of his car, manage to un-lock breaks and carry on, whilst trying to stop shaking (coffee combined with shaken nerves)!!

Soooooo i eventually stroll into work 6 hours after setting out at 9am and can begin work at 3pm!!

Best part.........my boss wasnt in after 12, she'd gone to london so i could have stayed at home and tried to solve the bike problem Shocked

Rolling Eyes

sorry about the long email but my day had to be shared. it did actually get worse... but im not going to go into all that as you'll all think im jinxed!! anyone got any thoughts on whats up with my bike im still inclined to battery! also can you beat that for a journey in?? obviously if youve had an off that instantly makes it worse!

If the batteries on it's way out, it may well be that.
Seem to remember a low battery on the RS250 (kick start, though, so could be run with a lot lower battery) could cause all sorts of problems, especially at low revs.
First thing I'd check though, is the HT lead - make sure it's securely on the sparkplug. I'd at least visually inspect the rest of it too.

I am mechanically retarded, but I had the exact same problem with my 02 RS125. It was five years ago mined but if I remember correctly it was a problem with the carburetor, luckily the garage I took it to manage to salvage some parts from somewhere and fixed it without me having to replace the whole thing (I think all they needed was a small pin or something) Sorry if this is a bit vague but it was a while ago but it sounds exactly the same as what happened to me!

I read the first few words and the first bike that came to my mind, was an RS125 Laughing

Well, I did have 3 callouts in an hour last year.

Car wouldn't start. Breakdown guy came, charged battery and got it fired up.

Had a drive to charge her up fully, got home, wouldn't start at all again. Same guy came out, badgered him into making a roadside repair (just a frayed cable in the starter circuit FFS - Wanted to take me to a garage but I made him fix it there with a new wire splice job) and headed off to fill her up.

Headed off into town, got a mile or so up the road before the turbo exploded and trollied the bottom of the engine.

Sad.

What was the worst bit? Had the engine fixed then a few weeks later came round a corner into a river that wasn't meant to be there (drainage ditch under the road blocked and flooded after a blind bend), nose dived in, trashed the engine......

Evil or Very Mad

Oh well....

Oh, and yesterday it took 4 hours to go one junction on the M40 following a crash and the Police closing off the carriageway...

Sorry to hear about your troubles and now also sorry for the hijack but it got me thinking...

I am in the AA and had to call them out to pick up my 125 once, as you mentioned in your post above " at least this guy knew what a bike was". The patrol guy that attended my breakdown and also the recovery driver called out after he had confirmed my suspicions that it was running like a bag of spanners pretty much admitted that with bikes it is almost always just a recovery mission.
Arent there any breakdown services aimed at motorcyclists who might at least make more of effort to get you back on the road than just turning the key and confirming its fucked? Just wondered Question

Had a stuck gear selector on the divvy and managed to limp it home in 5th. Called out the recovery service (homestart cover) and asked for a "Bike specific" guy.

When he arrived he took a quick look and said, "Hmm. Gearbox jammed, so I can recover it to a garage I know..."

"No thanks, I'lll make arrangements..."

Booked it into a local place for the next day then called for a wagon again to cart it there.

The Non-bike bloke said, "do you really want this recovered or shall I take 5 mins to fix it now for you?"

"Feel free and go for it..."

2 mins later he'd removed the loose bolt out of the footpeg hangar that had worked it's way under the Divvy's gear selector, cleaned it up, threadlocked it and stuck it back where it was meant to be....

Job done.

Had similar with the car, guy wanted to recover the car to a garage for a loose wire.... Badgered him into splicing in a new ignition/starter motor lead. All it took was 2 in-line connectors, an inch of wire and chopping some of the shroud off the connector plug....

I had an actual bike breakdown firm come out for my flat battery the other day, SOS motorcylesomethingorother, and that was the breakdown cover on my insurance (£45, so I wasn't expecting much).

I was fully expecting some bloke to turn up and ask where the other two wheels were so I was pleasantly surprised that this wasn't the case.

My worst road-using nightmare is: choosing to go somewhere in the car (because I have to wear a suit or it is pissing down and freezing AGAIN) and getting stuck for hours in traffic KNOWING I would have arrived by know if I had chosen the bike. I would open a vein.

Which is why I chose the bike. (mostly)
