Evil or Very Mad

Who else agrees that the current MotoGP coverage on the BBC is absolute shite?

All we seem to get is 20 mins of highlights or an hour or so at one in the morning!

Channel 5 used to devote the whole day to Moto GP last year, including the 250's and 125's, now we get a shitty 20 minutes of hightlights cause of the BBC.

Someone on the Motorcycle News website sent a letter to the BBC and this is the reply he recieved.

I am well aware that the timing slots given to GP are less than ideal but at present other events with pre-existing contracts take precedence and whilst you may not be a golf, snooker, rugby fan many, many millions are. I realise Channel 5 showed more coverage but despite reports to the contrary the BBC Sport portfolio is very strong and means that we have often have more than one event to show at the weekends. We are doing 5 live GP's this year and other GP's will get a longer slot - I have already managed to negotiate extra airtime from BBC2 for the 3 remaining late night shows this year.

Our long term aim is every GP live and we're working very hard towards this.
On the subject of 125 and 250, rather like F1 which is often mentioned in comparison, we have chosen to focus our energy on the main event and to build that up as a spectacle, there simply isn't the airtime for the others.
Due to government legislation we can't just put live sport on the digital channels either and late night slots are not easy to come by.

The team and I work incredibly hard to try and put together the best shows possible. This year is tough but the figures show that we are expanding the audience for GP - the bigger the audience, the bigger the place we have in the schedules - at the moment we continue to be very small fry beside other sports but we are working to change that. Part of that brief is to introduce the riders and teams and although that eats into the race time I think its important.

The BBC rates GP very highly and has long term plans to support it but it will take time and I ask you to bear with us. I want to make GP the unmissable event of the weekend.

We also have 2 hours of coverage of Monza this weekend - Race 1 in its entirety and live coverage of Race 2. The early long haul rounds have never been shown live whilst we will continue to do the European ones as last year.

At least they replied I suppose.

Yeah but it wouldnt have given a very good impression of the bbc to the thousands of MCN readers if they didnt reply. Basically i think its a crock of shite, if they cant fit it in properly they should do a highlight show on the bbc and put the full coverage on the digital channels!

Yeah I agree it's shit, but the reply was to 1 bloke on the GP Bulletin Board on the MCN site not to MCN themselves. I hate Formula 1 and not only have to put up with them showing the bloody thing prime time on a Sunday, they also show the qualifying on a Saturday!! I just find the whole thing really boring, no one has any good crashes or overtakes these days.

no F1 is all about the car, and i know to a certain extent that GP is aswell but its a lot more to do with the riders aswell. IMO F1 should have been killed off after all that team orders business, in no other sport could you get away with it! F1 Sucks hairy balls!

The MotoGP coverage is piss-poor, bloody 20 minute highlights at 11.30pm with a crap commentator so they can have the high octane edge-of-your-seat live golf on instead Evil or Very Mad. And whats with always showing the BSB at least a week late, what's stopping them showing them live?

Now if only I had sky at uni. Smile This is why it winds us up that the BBC took MotoGP away from Ch5 where it had decent coverage.

Yeah they do get really geeky when they're excited Razz. At least they don't miss too much though, the BBC commentators for Jerez somehow seemed to completely miss 8 Rossi overtaking moves in 2 laps! Rolling Eyes

Hi,

Can't comment on the BBC as I never watch the MotoGP on there but instead use Eurosport.

Eurosport coverage is great. I think it's also a free to air channel so all you would need is a cheap digital sat dish and receiver.

Regards,
Kevin.

It used to be free-to-air, I don't think it is now though Sad. You can't get it on the Sky Digital box unless you're paying for a subscription, and it doesn't come on those new 99 quid set-top boxes. I would've had one if it was on it.

This is the case, I knowm I am one of those. However, more people play golf than ride (or race) bikes so the bbc give it more air time.

What I find fucking annoying is that they have to gall to spend MY fucking license fee stealing the coverage from an independently funded channel, then reduce the coverage to 5% of what it was, then have the front to make shite excuses about it.

well fuck you mr bbc man, this is not what I want my license money spent on .. I demand more repeats of Fawlty Towers Evil or Very Mad
