Quick question, as I'm new to this whole "sponging off the state" thing Smile

There's two types of JSA, income based and contribution based. Being over 25, both of these are £60.50 per week, according to :-

https://www.jobcentreplus.gov.uk/JCP/Customers/WorkingAgeBenefits/Dev_015272.xml.html

Do you get both (assuming you qualify for contribution based allowance), or only one or the other?

One or the other, not both. Remember you can also qualify for housing benefit (if you're renting), mortgage interest benefit, and council tax benefit. As well as getting free NHS prescriptions.

Expect them to ponce your helmet off you at the door, as they reckon you'll club the staff with it.

You'll be puzzled, right up until you converce with the cretin.

Oh and don't miss a signing, or god does it get irritating. Empathy is not in their vocab.

As for which to take, the adviser when you first sign should let you know.

Don't let them know;

You have any savings
You have been out of the country... ever

They're just generally irritating. Trust me.

You've paid taxes at some point and made NI contributions so don't expect much off them, you're best off changing your name and saying you've never worked in your life because you've got an ingrowing toenail, they might give you a housing upgrade and a new car.

[hijack] My ma' rang the tax credits people to tell them I was no longer in education the other day and they said I could get JSA. Is this true under 18, as I have had alot of people tell me I can't. Not that I plan on being on it long if I can help it. Also I am gonna be moving out pretty soon, and my mate gets Income Support of ~£95 a fortnight for living with a retired grandparent, so I was wondering if I would be eligible as a 16 year old living with a flat mate earning probably about £12k? [/hijack].

shaggy,

you automatically qualify for contributions based jsa if you have been made redundant, if you have been sacked or quit of your own accord then the benefits office can impose restrictions on your claim and you may not get any money for x amount of weeks (whatever they see fit essentially)

you won't qualify for income based if your wife/live in lover/life partner earns more than x amount (could be around 14k per year) as that is deemed enough for 2 people to live on.

as for housing benefit, council tax benefit etc etc, chances are you won't qualify for these either, same goes for free dental, eycare, prescriptions etc etc. its all down to the elusive income based jsa.

how the government thinks a grown man with bills to pay can live on 60.50 per week is beyond me.

Quote:

you may be able to get jsa but at a reduced rate, arond £45 per week.
working tax credits are the way forward as they top up your wages (if you are working of course).

I'm 24 and get £47.95 and they cap my housing allowance to £260. If I was a year older I could get the £60 and a lot more for housing allowance, why they think 24 year olds can live a lot cheaper is beyond me.

Doing a quick reckoning, if I just had council tax, water, gas and electricity to pay my monthly outgoings would be £195. JSA would be £260, so I'd have £65 a month to clothe and feed myself, or £2.13 a day. It's achievable, but would mean I could only seek work within a radius I could walk to, and not be contactable by phone. Not a very attractive prospective employee.

Good thing the wife has a part time job.

its because in their infinite wisdom, the government think people who are 24 still live with their parents and are therefore still supported by them.

Though you do not qualify if you live with someone you're related too...which sucks big time!!!

You have to pay full council tax benefit, AND your rent out of £60 a week!!!!!! Thumbs Down

i was on JSA for about 6 weeks between jobs - and it took 6 weeks for me to get any payment which was a sum of 250quid, joke really considering i paid over 5 grand tax this year already - so when i got my 250 quid i brought myself a set of tools from halfrauds and 150 quids worth of parts for me to service my bike myself with! Free Prescriptions? You've got to be bloody joking! Now im not making a sweeping genrelisation here, as not everyone who's on jobseekers is a lazy, fat bum, but why the hell should do they not have to pay yet people like myself or anyone else who have Hypertension or something related have to pay £ 7.10 for the rest of our lifes.

Utter joke.

Errr, if you have a recognised long term illness, you can quite often get support with prescription costs.

I don't pay for my prescriptions or anything on the NHS, cause i'm a student. Seems fair to me. It's not a private service afterall.

Not with a lot of conditions, including hypertension (I have to have two different meds for it, so it's £14.20 for me Mad ) and even pennicilin dependents (post-splenoctomy) still have to pay!! Neutral

Only with stuff such as Diabetes, Thyroid Problems and Epilepsy and a couple of others are covered.

Hypertension although not life threatening for mild sufferers still needs to be regulated and this means daily tablets, and should be covered. Mine hovers at a respectable rate with tablets, however if i dont have them it shoots through the roof.

Personally i think its a silly system.

If you have to get more than two items a month, get a prepayment card. Your two items would cost you £170.40 a year, whereas a 12 month card is £102.50.
