This is a game me and my mates play.

The idea is this, you have £1500 to spend on a bike from MCN bike Mart to get you to the South of France/Spain, it must be able to cruise at 90mph with the rest of your mates bikes, you must be able to load it up with soft luggage, tent etc, scratching ability once you get there is good but you do need to be able to ride it in reasonable comfort.
Any money not spent on the bike goes on beer.
You dont have to keep the bike after the trip it can be sold as soon as you get back.

So there you have it. Sorry if its been done before.

From this weeks MCN there are

95 F650 Funduro with 22K miles, service history T+T £1500

97 CBR 600 33K miles no mention of T+T or SH, new tyres and tank bag £1100

91 VFR400 45K miles non standard paint, partial rebuild last year no mention of T+T or SH.

96 GPZ500S 12.5K miles, T+T slight cosmetic damage, datatagged, recent battery and downpipes. £1200

99 ZX7R 24.5K miles, new rear tyre, T+T, partial SH, £1495

90 GSX750F 22K miles T+T scuffs, new battery/fork seals, £750

98 GSX750F 13K miles partial SH, 12 months T+T, datatagged Double bubble + original, £1450

Thats about it.

Well what do you think? Go for comfort with the late GSX? Go for sports with the 7R? Cheapness and liver damage with the old GSX? The all round ability of the CBR?

For me its a 3 way race btween the CBR, Late GSX or the 7R.

Probably settling on the 7R with a tank bag and extra seat sponge for the motorway trip.

Hi

Not sure I would want the 7R for that long a journey.CBR has a poxy size petrol tank which would mean filling up too often on the way. That leaves the GSXs.

But online there seems loads more choice. Probably go for the Thunderace at ~£1200.

All the best

Keith

I like the idea of the Funduro, but 90mph cruising would remove the fillings and cause the piles to combust. After that I'd go for the GPZ500S. If choosing online, there's a '97 ZZR1100 with 27k on the clock for £1100.

Please send the link to the MCN online thingy. We can include that but no others coz it makes the choice too wide.

I thought about the 500S, they handle quite well when the rear shock is in good nick but i thought its a bit small for me and i cant help thinking that 90 mph cruising would be a bit hard on the motor and myself. It seems a bit expensive at £1200 for a cosmetically challenged 500S in January, the re sale value after the trip wouldnt be good, would it? I thought they were cheaper than that anyway?

Just checked out the site, there are some real bargains on there but there is too much choice, just look for the bike you want and name it. The thing with the newspaper based game is there will only be a limited choice so you have to think about (and probably explain to someone) the reasons behind your compromised decision.

Plus you can play it in the pub. Which is where my MCN gets its first read anyway.

I have done, Morocco on a £600 shitter. I was on an FJ1100 and me mate did it on a VFR750. We wanted the freedom of not having to care what happened to the bikes. "It was only £600, it got stripped, i just checked into a bar for a few days then got a flight home" sort of thinking.

They didn't have a GPZ900 which is why I plumped for the ZZR Smile

Come on then Shaggy, why the 500S? The late GSX would be more comfy and longer legged, how would the fuel consumption be at 90mph, would that outwiegh the disadvantage of the smaller tank on the CBR as it would be better at MPG at 90?

At the moment i'm sticking to the 7R, a tankbag to lean on and some foam for me arse, cant be any worse than me blade for arse comfort.

I rode a 7R to Barcelona without any aches or pains. The tank range is so pathetic that you have to stop for fuel before numb bum sets in anyway. I'd have a 7R for touring out of that list anyday.

Just to be clear, we ride at 90mph on autoroutes for about 100 miles then stop and fill up, about 500 miles in a day, thats the kind of touring we are talking about.

I'm still going for the 7R.

I was doing 300-350 miles a day. Didn't use a single motorway (on the continent anway) and avoided using dual carrigeways as much as possible. My 7R usually does ~106 miles to reserve. It was perfect for me to tour on.

I recon that two days travel there and two days back, i can cope with the 7R, plus it would be wonderful in the Alps/Pyrenees.

The 500S has a large tank and is good on petrol.. Pretty easy on the last one we had to get 220 miles before reserve (but the petrol tank got water in it easily, so not good to rely on reserve). They do have a decent amount of go (127mph top speed from the road tests from memory).

One pannier for bottles of oil.

To be honest the Bimota has an FZR1000 EXUP engine (basically the same as a Thunderace) and burns very little oil.

All the best

Of those in the list, it's the only one that I've actually ridden and know to be comfortable. The GSX may be as good (or better) but I wouldn't want to find out it's not on a round trip to the south of France/Spain.

OK, fair point. But is it worth it just for the trip there and back, after all, you'll be hooning for more days than you are "fast touring"?

You must like 'em!!

Fair enough!!

I must admit, i've always loved the 7R, never had one, but raced a couple and they sound awasome on a race pipe.

No, just thought about the choice again and its still the 7R, tank bag to lean on to take the wieght off me wrists, and some foam for me arse which i can ditch if i dont need it.

The GPZ is very comfortable and good on fuel as everyone as said. £1200 is far too much for that particular example by the looks of it though. Mine cost a grand with 14k on the clock and light cosmetic damage and this was two years ago. It also had new downpipes on it. And it was a year newer.
