Looking for those subtle weapons, those bikes that might look a little weak, but conceal obscene power and rideability.

I can't start, because I don't know of any good examples, it's why I'm asking ya know.

I'm sure some of you have some info nuggets to post so the rest of us can speculate, and not be taken for baboons by people on these piss-ant looking machines.

Could I propose my zx9...
https://gees.zenfolio.com/img/v0/p224232994-4.jpg
143(rw)hp, Ohlins shock, WP fork internals, Harris Rearsets (Ohlins damper not fitted at the mo), supercorsa front tyre, full Akrapovic Titanium system with Micron end titanium... bar muffs, cheap enduro light and top-box.
It's now supporting a 1m flexible LED strip fitted around the muffs to aid visibility to others, as well as lots of uber-reflective sticky tape stuff.

Anything sporty and two stroke, I've ridden with some fast RS125ers before and they were out riding CBRs and ZX6Rs on torpoint windy ridge. They went onto RS250s after a few months and were uncatchable to any of the 4 strike crowd bar Jason.

RS250s and RGVs are particularly nasty surprise as they look small and weedy (like thin 4 stroke 125cc bikes).

Also around manchester there seem to be lots of rat bikes of IL4s , TT man had a ZX12R rat biked with a single head lamp.

The good old ZZR1100 looks pretty dated these days. Do not be fooled, this bike WILL steal your lunch money then spend it on fags.

I have been significantly embarrassed by an RD500 within the last 12 months although I suspect that was more to do with the rider than the bike itself.

I also encountered a guy on an SZR660 last summer who I couldn't get near on my VFR750.

Again, more down to the rider than the bike.

So my advice is to beware of someone who looks small and light, wearing battered looking leathers that is climbing about all over their bike. No matter what they are riding.

I'll throw in a nomination for Tristan the's CB500 although G's ZX9 is going to take some beating, especially with that topbox/muffs combo Smile

Hell, even the 600 variant will top out at about 155 or so. rolling start, get her into third gear then pin the throttle back and it'll explode away. Especially when you get up to 7krpm or so and the air ram/scoops really start doing their job...

Seriously underestimated piece of kit. I loved mine (to lamp post related death).

I always thought the V-Max was a bit of a subtle missile. It looks savage, but not in a speed type of way.

RD350 YPVS. Looks like a dog, goes like a scalded cat. Cool

350 Mito's too but they aren't production bikes.

{edit} I absolutely love stuff like this. Bikes and cars that look pretty boring but can pwn everything short of a Lamborghini on the road. I love the Audi RS4, I quite like the Rocket III (but its a little too gaudy).

There aren't as many sleeper bikes as there are cars (some people call them Q cars). When I had my TZR250 I wanted to stick 125 stickers on it and pwn a load of boi racers! Smile

I'm kinda hoping the same thing for my RD. I'm planning to keep the suspension and wheels superficially standard, but I want to play with the fork internals and the rear shock. It would be cool to have a knackered old shed that can go stupidly fast. Most uninitiated people would think it was a 125 anyway - being a two stroke and all.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

It is reasonably quick and looks reasonably standard, but there are far quicker bikes around.

Any large bore sports-tourer will often be under-estimated. The lack of bright decals and race crouch means that cagers and even some bikers will assume old fart on a slow, big bike.

250+ strokers can be under-estimated, but the race crouch, exhaust, and sound are often a giveaway.

Best bet is a zzr-11, zx-14, blackbird or similar in black or silver. I recall taking a road test on a blackbird, wacking the trottle open in second gear coming off a slow roundabout to nip past 4 cars, as I passed the last car I eased off the throttle to drop the front wheel so I could turn in, I checked the speedo to see I was doing 120; a seriously quick bike.

Mine used to eat SV650s for breakfast then pick its teeth with the plug leads.

*nods*

I've surprised quite a few people on the R1200 - the sit-up-and-beg riding position and panniers all over it means people often assume the wrong thing. It's usually an Audi on my arse just before the NSL signs, and as long as I remember to not bounce off the rev limiter as I pin it I'm laughing...

Yeah my R1100RT was pretty quick, but with around 90bhp and a fairing the size of Wales it wasn't blistering. I do recall playing with a BMW M3 between Basingstoke and Reading on it once though where as much as he wanted to shake me off he couldn't and in the end just he just let me pass.

I had a mate with a GPz305 that matched that description; he'd quite often make fools of people on 600 & 750s. Sure, we'd all pass him on the motorway, but any numbnuts with enough money can do that.

That'd be because you were 'racing' the wrong SV650 riders Wink.

I suspect most car drivers would see a sports tourer and presume they're fast; an awful lot seem to think harleys are really fast!

Oh and that not only looks quite pretty but doesn't go that fast Mark Razz (unless yours is significantly quicker than mine was, anyway.)

I'm thinking in particular of a couple of mates who I've ridden with a lot who had SV650s at the same time I had my last GPZ500.

One is a roughly equivalent rider to myself, the other is a better rider. Both could pass on reasonably long straights, neither could keep up on the twisties.

But I agree, the rider has much more to do with it than the bike.
