the output of the cig lighter plug for my tomtom says 5.8v, so assuming i can hook up a connector to some wires, will a 6v bike run it? or will the charging voltage of the bike be too high?

cheers, luke.

6v should be OK but personally I'd stick a regulator circuit in there to make sure it doesn't go above that.

It also may well be an AC system so you need a capacitor and some diodes in there to smooth it too. Even if not, they would still be a good idea.

Use something like this:

I think 5 volts would be enough to charge it actually.

Are you thinking of installing a Cig lighter socket on your bike. Or are you planning on cutting the Cig lighter plug off the Sat Nav wiring, and wiring it directly to the 6v supply?

The guy knows whats hes doing. Most cig lighter adaptors are there to drop the voltage from 12v to 5v(ish). He is just looking at a way of bypassing it. No different to charging from a USB.
