A friend of mine has a bike with no frame number.

He needs an MOT on it, but can't get one because of the lack of frame number.

Is there a way around it? Like putting a bit of tape over where the number should be and the MOT tester not being able to remove it?

If you're wondering it's a rebuild onto a blank frame, not a nicked bike.

I've owned a bike for 4 years without a frame number, never caused me a problem. Not one MOT guy as asked or looked for it, they just take it off the old MOT. Have they refused to MOT it?

If you don't have an old MOT use the log book.

Or just stamp the frame yourself with the number in the log book.

Fair play, just found out he's waiting for a letter from kawasaki to the DVLA to confirm the frame is of the same type then he can stamp it without being Q plated. Thumbs Up

Can't he just give DVLA the receipt for the frame?

Why didn't he get the original frame number stamped on the new frame?

No idea.

The orignial frame was slightly smashed, perhaps he didn't want it on the HPI register.

Best idea is to re register the bike.

Apply to the DVLA and tell then you have no frame numbers , they should then issue you with a "Q" plate registeration and then the bike can be Mot`ed with no problems.

He doesn't want a Q. They are a pain to sell at a decent price. Wink

It's being sorted anyway though.

Qs are a pain to source insurance for.

However it does get a vehicle back on the road quickly, and he can always apply for an age related plate once the letter arrives from Kawasaki.

I'd been on the road for over a year. He only just needs an MOT for it because it turns three years old next month. Thumbs Up

That makes no sense. DVLA don't notify HPI.

This is starting to sound like a badly crashed bike that's been put back on the road built out of parts which is why the DVLA problems are happening. One that's never been party to an insurance claim so isn't recorded.

DVLA don't require anything like letters from the manufacturer if you have a receipt but if you don't they do. Although how a manufacturer could id a frame without a number on it or a receipt in a way to appease DVLA I don't know.

Shrug, I probably don't know the whole story to be honest. That's just what he said.

Meh. Thumbs Up
