Not sure if this is in the right place but I'm having trouble with visor misting or fogging. Bought a nolan helmet with inbuilt anti-fog insert...the type that fits in between two studs and after 5 minutes starts to fog so that Im left with a small area to look through...very dangerous. I have also tried a fog city insert but for some reason that fogs up aswell......anybody got any ideas whats happening? I will try anything except set it on fire. Shocked Very Happy

The anti fog insert should work perfectly unless its not sealed all the way round. The fog city insert should work even better, once its sealed all the way round.

I find the best anti fog is to leave the visor open slightly.

+1 to what ichy said

sounds like the insert is not properly sealed, take it out and start again, if its a sticky type one and you can't get it to seal properly then try a pinlock branded one as they have a bead of silicone type stuff so can be put in or taken out as much as you like.
you may need to re adjust the pins too to make it seal.

they can be a pain in the arse but are fantastic once there in right, you'l never have foging problems again

This works in 99% of cases better than any insert.

Never tried it meself but I heard years ago that rubbing your visor with a cut potato prevented fogging. Don't know what it would smell like but it's a chip sorry cheap option Laughing

Thanks for replies everyone......the original insert collects condensation on the inside....lift visor and I can wipe it with my finger.

The fogcity insert I have in my other helmet is perfect but in this one it fogs up just the top half...if I tilt my head back the visor is clear....strange.

This visor has a large first click opening which makes it ruddy cold to run open this time of year.

This is the old kitchen window formula, might end up doing just that or get an expensive something of the shelf.

The trouble is from closed to first click open is too big a gap.

You don't open it to the first click, just a smidgeon. The gap should be big enough to get a something between a penny and a pound coin through. You can stick a little bit of foam on the lip of the helmet to stop it shutting by itself.

Washing up liquid and potatoes (!) affect the vision at night causing a lot of 'sparklies'. Neither will last long anyway.

I have a Nolan N84 and although it also has the pinlock style insert I did notice it steaming up some mornings. I found that using a Respro Foggy mask deflected my breath down and away from the visor, though I did have to take the chin flap insert thing out to get it to work without ever having to open the visor.

If you do buy one, it's important to note that the instructions advise sticking a velcro pad (supplied) to the inside of the helmet. This is impractical with the N84 for two reasons: firstly the chin vents open into the helmet through the front, and secondly the plastic is of such a compound as to render the adhesive useless. The good news is you won't need the velcro pad anyway as securing the mask to the cheek pads is good enough to do the job. Thumbs Up

This because when you tilt your head back, your looking through the bottom half as your eyes stay level with the road.

And if you plan on leaving it open literally a mil or 2, try to shut it in the case of an off(if possible before the actual incident). Stuff can force it open they your eyes are in real danger. This, is.... just rare circumstance advice. Wink

It's quite possible you have the insert in back-to-front... The silicone bad around the edge must be between th insert and the visor.

More likely though is that the tension is wrong, so it isn't sealing all the way around. It should be in as tight as possible without making the insert kink.

Also to make sure you put it in right; the visor needs to be bent so that it is almost straight... So when you put the insert in between the pins and let it go back into it's usual shape, it puts tension on the insert.

Hope that helps!

Yes it does help thanks.....there is no silicone around the edge of the insert but I did notice the insert was a little loose so I have turned it round and now it fits very tight...so will give it another try when weather picks up. Rolling Eyes Thumbs Up

Would Rain-X work to prevent misting on the inside since my Anti-Fog visor isnt very effective once the visor is shut:

https://www.infinitymotorcycles.com/product.asp?ProductID=118&ProductName=HJC%20CL-14%20Planet

I cant put a Fog -City on it since they advise not fitting them to Anti-Fog visors??

In my experience Anti-fog visors tend to be coated and as such the use of Rain-X wipes and visor sprays is rendered useless. unfortunately the whole point of the coating is to prevent anything from sticking to it, and this is precisely what you want a wipe or spray to do.

If you like the helmet keep it and either, buy a new visor/pinlock insert combination, or buy an un-coated visor and use Fog Tech wipes as recommended by RiDE in their recent tests.

has anyone tried sticking the adhesive plastic sheets that you usually find covering the screen of your brand new mobile phone to the inside of your visor?
