Just a bit of advice wanted.

I start work in September. Until then I am a student.

Eventually, of course I want a full license, but wanted some advice on the most cost effective way to do it.

I have the option to do the CBT in the next few weeks, which I am kinda dying to do, then get a CG125 or similar when I am back home at my parents in the summer (because the insurance will be very cheap, as opposed to in London adress, where it is £550 instead of £300), then at the end of the summer do the DAS.

The other option is to do nothing till the summer, then just do the DAS and get a Hornet or whatever.

One final thing, which mixes the two is to do CBT just for fun now; then pick up DAS in the summer and get the hornet after that straight way bypassing the CBT.

What do you think guys?

Thanks

Isn't a cbt compulsory? You can't bypass it because:

You need it to be elegible to take the DAS/theory.

Unless I've made a big mistake here.

Bypassing cbt isn't an option.

I think he means do the CBT alone now, or the CBT combined with the DAS at a later date.

Personally, I would (I did) do the CBT and get it out the way. Don't bother with a 125, just wait until summer and do your DAS. You can do the theory test in the meantime as well.

You're likely to pick up bad habits if left to your own devices on a 125 for 4 months, causing more agro when you come to do the DAS. Better off get taught properly from the start.

Are you really gonna want to ride round London in shit weather on a 125 anyway? As a new rider, I can't imagine it's going to be the most pleasurable experience.

Hang fire I say.

>edit just noticed you said ride the 125 in summer at your 'rents. Still I reckon do the DAS straight away. The money you would have spent on a 125 will pay for the DAS and some decent gear. Little bikes are relatively expensive as well because of demand.

Skulff, I think you are right - that sounds sensible to me. Smile

I am tempted to try and even squeeze the DAS even earlier - before the new test comes in.

But the problem I am facing is that I cannot seem to work out the cost implication of doing so if I happen to wait. Ie, how much more is the new test likely to cost?

No change. The off-road portion will cost a tenner, and the road portion will be seventy, until the next round of price rises. Check the thread in the News forum.

If your nearest 'super-centre' is a fair distance to you, that is also a factor (eg. nearest one to York is Hull, 40 miles away) especially if you have a test cancelled = your travel costs/time off work, instructor's travel time/bike hire for longer time per test (so less tests per day - less money earnt).

Good point.

Well, I will book up the CBT and then see if I can fit it in.

Just one more thing to check: I don't need anything in advance of the CBT do I?

I see on my paper part of my license I have a provisional on cat A. Thats all I need, isn't it?

Yep, your provisional license will do you fine for your CBT. No theory test needed yet.
