The much dismantled and abused fibre gasket on the float bowl of the Jawa has finally let go.

A new one would need to be sent out from Germany and has little or no chance of arriving and being fitted for when I was going to be using it (Friday coming, my mate threw the gauntlet and said he would take his MZ TS250 to the Dragon Rally).

So. I have all sorts of stuff here and all manner of gloops and goos. What could I make a gasket for a carb float bowl out of? Would simple gasket paper or card do the job?

First thing that comes to mind is cork, I think paper is going to be too thin. Whatever you use I reckon it needs to be relatively thick, compressible and not going to disolve.

What about the plastic foam stuff, similar to what they use to insulate laminate flooring? If you had the patience you might be able to cut one out of rubber, say an old inner tube?

All of this is pure random thinking. If it was me I would leave whatever I was going to try soaking in a jar of petrol for a day or so to see what happens.

A common MZ mod is to use PTFE tape, but the float bowl on my MZ clips on so its quite easy to do. You just drape some PTFE tape around the rim of the float bowl and then clip it on.

If its a screw on type it might be a bit harder.

Ahh! Genius.

Vinyl floor covering!

I'll try some in petrol tonight.

go around a couple of your local motor factors and ask for "gasket paper" you should be able to find it in varying thicknesses ...

then use the remains of your old one as a pattern and cut the new one out with a craft knife from your local pound shop (they have little sets with about a dozen blades in them) or Aldi is selling a craft knife kit as well
