Its illegal to camp wild or savage as they call it, that said France is a big big place so is Spain and touring both countries there would be ample places to camp wild.

Just don't do it in obvious or monitored places ie beaches and motorway rest stops.

Just about anywhere you go in the alps that's nice for camping you'll find big 'CAMPING VIETATO' (well, in italy anyway).
And I went through europe with the intention of camping rough and I'll tell you one thing, it's bloody hard to find somewhere suitable

Night 1) I slept in a lay by
Night 2) I slept in another lay bay
Night 3) I slept in a field that seemed unkempt
Night 4) I slept in a ditch
Night 6) I slept on a beach (very cold, sandy and covered in shit)
Night 7) I slept on cardboard under a hedge, obviously previously occupied by bums
Night 8) I gave up and tried a campsite
Night 14) I realised hostels were about the same price and gave up on the camping thing altogether

No it is illegal in England and Wales.

In more civilised countries such as Scotland, you have a legal right to wild camp providing it is "responsible", that is, not causing damage or impinging on someones direct privacy.

We never had a problem finding somewhere. Fields, bushes, bus-shelters, derelict houses, roundabouts, service-areas, watch-towers, you name it we've slept/pitched in it.

What are you humans or foxes? Smile

Pat

PS Whilst in the lake district (which hetzer will be glad to know is still run by nazi-fascist pig-dogs) i found it near impossible to find a pitch. Until i knocked on a few farms and asked if i could pitch in their back garden (field) waved a fiver and most of the time i could stay for nowt. as long as yer not scruffy & don't stare them out i'm pretty sure it'd work abroad. If all else fails then do as recommended by others and get somewhere out of view.

Arrive late and leave early if it's a bit iffy.

Locals didn't seem bothered when we pitched up in Spain.

this summer me and a few mates had no trouble in germany, liechtenstein, italy or france but were did tend to be off the beaten track somewhat (abandoned church, orchard, mountain, closed swiss border control, pub garden etc). one dutch police biker (in the single gayest pair of tight leather cords ever) said we couldnt sleep in the car in amsterdam but he left us alone as he had better stuff to do.
a policy of arrive late leave early is probably best, or ask the landowners permission if you can find them.
but yeh 3 weeks and never paid for accommodation so go for it, just remember to wash whenever possible. german service station showers and alpine streams are amazing!

Meh who cares if its illegal. I just used woodland by the side of the road away from any pathways. Ride through the bushes into a concealed area and pitch up Smile

In Spain it's legal to camp at the side of the road as long as you aren't within x miles of an official licenced campsite.

Yes, x miles, can't remember how many it is any more.

Didn't know that... I wouldn't have gone to so much trouble at JoG to find somewhere that was concealed (a lot harder without trees.)

Most places in UK it's easier enough to find somewhere you won't be bothered if you're sensible, in my experience.

I agree, Find a car park and put the bike there, walk 200 metres away, and dive behind the nearest dry stone wall etc with a bivvy bag.

Works for me.

Not when you get up to the lattidues near the top (note this was at John'o'Groats), no not really. Which is something I hadn't considered with my plan to 'wild camp'.

Oh and I didn't find any problems using a tent - choose your site carefull, set up late and leave early. Worse that's likely to happen is to be asked to leave in the UK.
Did similar when recovery gave me a car (did try and blag a hotel on recovery, but they weren't having it)... just found a secluded field with an open gate, drove the car in so it was concealed and setup tent in front of it.

Because the tent was warmer, darker and had less condensation, as well as enough room for me to actually lie down (it was a fiesta) Smile.

Well you can't always find one , on the beaten track there are plenty but in the abandoned section into Portugal I didn't find many and found some abandoned ones too.
