Has anyone tried one of the DIY nickel plating kits?

I've a bike I'm restoring and its costing a fortune getting small parts done. I've seen the kits and wondered if they were actually good value for money? What are the results like? What about the cost of refills, anodes and salts?

Are there any other options, other than paint, that will give a good metallic, corrosion resistant finish? DIY passivation?

Cheaper the better. Thumbs Up

Hi

I have one of the kits, but not used it yey. Got most of what I need, but need something to store the chemicals in when not in use so looking for some cheap glass demi johns (sp?).

The anodes are not that cheap but should last a fair while.

All the best

Keith

Hi

Mine came from one of the Stafford shows last year from "Tec-Nick". I bought a larger kit that contains most things you need (then found my father had one of the smaller kits with pretty much just the basics in it, which he gave to me). Came with instructions, components to make the control unit (ie, box, bulb holders, wire and switches to use some 12V bulbs to control the "power"), chemicals, paper for testing the chemicals (presume it is litmus paper or something like that), electrodes, copper wires, thermometer, etc.

What I have sourced is a cheap fish tank for the plating and a long fish cooking dish to use to degrease things properly (there are some acid salts in the kit for this). As said I just need to source some large glass bottles to store the chemicals in when not in use.

All the best

Keith

Kickstart, ask on your local "freecycle" (yahoo groups) for your demijohns, that should give you a reasonably wide audience

Good idea. Hadn't even considered that.

All the best
