Just got some questions about hornets as im doing my test this month and have my eye on one.

Easy to get your hands on a 33bhp restrictor kit?
Are they reliable?
Does age particularly matter more than it normally does?
Easy for a shortass to ride? (5"4-5 Very Happy )
Any problems i should know about?

Many thanks all. Thumbs Up

Ideally the Hornet you purchase will already have the restrictors fitted.

If you looking at purchasing a early model then these can be picked up for peanuts.

it should be perfect for your height.

The only possible issues are that the suspension is a little naff and the brakes are more sorted to a beginner.

They are however known for their reliablity and ease to ride.

Best bet maybe to purchase a 07 as any issues that the previous hornets had they seem to have corrected.

All in all should be a great first bike choice.

sounds great Very Happy
hmm money might be abit too tight for an 07 though.
Where do you recommend to get the restrictor kits from?
ebay or main dealer?
ooo also, what would the insurance be like on them for a 2 year's no claim rider Neutral ?
Cheers for the help Thumbs Up

the restrictor kits are a rip off as only one company supplies them and that is F1 international and i believe the charge £150.

Try to find one already restricted if possible or if you purchase the bike from a dealer they may do a deal for you on the restricition.

ocassionally restrictors turn up on ebay so it maybe worth looking now and then on there.

As for the insurance if you over the age of 21 and taking into account your NCD ,insurance shouldnt be to bad especially TPFT.

i just ran a quote i assumed you are male and a student , ride a hornet 600 2000.

The quote TPFT was £866.55.

But if you use the company i found they take into account the restrictors and offer discounts. They are called ebikeinsurance.co.uk

Questions answered in order.

Yes.
Yes, bar the sticky Cam Chain tensioners and regulator rectifier failure.
Sort of. The pre 2000 bikes had a 16 inch front wheel which limits your tyre choice a bit. 2000 and on bikes had a 17 inch front.
Yes they are easy for the short of leg.
Bar the above CCT and reg/rec failiure, they are a common first bike so check for drop damage.

HTH.

shop around the insurance companies. Buy a bike mag and just spend a day going threw the insurance companies in the back.

i am 18 on a hornet (2 years no claims) and ive payed 419 for the year tpft plus legal cover, kit cover, personal injury cover, unlimited mileage and i get to ride anyone elses bike that is under 33bhp.

with a company called flacon

Another thing with the hornet check for any wheelie damage so check its not dropping out of second gear or theres any damage to the headstock or fork seals anything really.

the seat lock tends to break on them but thats not really a massive problem Laughing

in 03 they had a bit of a makeover and got a bigger fuel tank (mine only does 100 miles or so to a tank and thats full to the brim)

They are good bikes, Im the same Height as you and i had no problems,

They only have little fuel tank, can be prone to overheating,

I never bothered with restrictors but i think my restriction might have been over by the time i got the hornet...

I had a '98, The original with a 16' front wheel, I recommend Pirelli Diablo's

Oh and what has been said that the brakes are suited for beginners is true, but with braided hoses mine would stoppie no problems so they arent that bad...
