well i have aquired a vt250 (free) with a couple of spare engines and a big box of spares,

i am currently trying to get it running, and you'd think being as simple a engine as it is it shouldnt be a problem
but all i have managed is a huge fireball from the carb (ether induced Embarassed ) and a rather large back fire,

i have a decent spark on both cylinders (new plugs)
i have decent compression on both cylinders
the timing is set correctly on both and i did the valve clearances
i have cleaned out both carbs..

it should run right???

well tell that to the bloody bike Very Happy

any ideas helpful,
here are some pics of the state of it. bear in mind its an 86 bike
and hasnt been running in 3 years

as it turned up to my house

Ive got no experience of the VTs, but make sure the airbox is connected properly, i know a few bikes that refuse to cough without an airbox but burst into life on the button with it fitted.
oh and use a drop of petrol down the bores rather than easy start etc.

Cheers
John

yeah its a bloody inboard disc setup, craziness really, about as good as anti dive forks, ya know a bit of a fad in the 80s,
yeah its got an airbox and brandnew airfilter fitted,
just checked cams again, and all is good there,
can't really alter ignition timing as its 2 seperate fixed pickups,
ill try the petrol down the bore an see how i go, (ive gone off easy start after that fire ball Very Happy)

ill keep ya posted, im kind of miffed really.

keep the ideas coming

I know what you mean about easy start, I managed to set myself, an air filter and my wiring on fire in a matter of seconds with that stuff.

good at bike rallys though for starting campfires. Laughing

Good luck
John

to check that my last goldwing stood a chance of running i squirted a shot of easystart down the carb throats (all i wanted was it to cough a couple of times) DON'T go mad with it...

if it coughs/fires a couple of times you're good to go, all you need then is to get petrol flowing thru the carbs correctly which can be tricky with modern fuels and carbs when the bike has sat for as long as yours has ...

i got a lawnmower a couple of weeks ago with a very basic carb that had been sitting two years, the carb didn't look too bad but it had blocked the main jet solid ...

moderm bike carbs are way more complicated with loads more passages that may be blocked (my wing carbs were scrap)

id go with carb prob looking at the furriness of that little vt

is it possible the leads are the wrong way round at the coil if its a double as this big backfire has mixed up firing order written all over it.
worth checking as god knows what's been done since it last lived Thumbs Up

If the plugs are getting wet you can pretty much rule out carbs for now, id be tempted to go along with the HT leads being the wrong way around or something simmilar.

Cheers
