Phone service providers?

Can they tell if you are using your mobile as a modem for your lappy?
I have unlimited internet on my contract phone as can use it to connect my comp to the net, though it does state in my contract that i'm not supposed to, do they actually know, or is it just a case of the info they get is the same as surfing on the mobile?

'Unlimited' data doesn't really mean unlimited. These services have daily/weekly/monthly caps (read the fair usage fine print), and you will get flagged up if you start pulling huge chunks of data over 3G. If you use it lightly, maybe for emails and a little surfing, then it could be ok.

I doubt if there's any way they can tell if you're using GPRS through the handset or through a laptop. You're probably OK.

A mate of mine a few years ago had a contract with about 2 MB of internet included. Going over it was supposed to cost something silly like £3/MB, but for some reason they never charged him. One month he was at some camp, connected the phone to his laptop and then shared the connection through wifi, letting everybody else use it. He racked up over 40 MB and wasn't charged a penny

Right... all http (normal web traffic) is unencrypted so they can see WHAT you're accessing and may well cache/filter what you can surf however i don't get how they can tell whether it comes from a laptop that's attached to it or not. i know vodaphone specficially allows you to use your phone as a modem and i know people that have used o2 ones for it and not had to pay any extra.
