DEPENDS WHAT MILEAGE ITS DONE.

Listen dude, you aren't going to last long on this forum unless you can learn to not use all caps, and learn to use the full stop key.

(the Full stop key is on the right of the UK keyboard between the / key and the , key. Thumbs Up Smile

Anyway. What mileage has this bike done? What condition is it in? How are its consumables? (tyres, brake pads, bearings)

I can't say if its a bargain until I know more about those really.

I've heard about lots of gearbox problems ([articularly second gear) with earlier R1s,

Sounds reasonable. Take it easy if the weather is bad!

Welcome to the forum by the way! Thumbs Up Smile

Look for oily smoke when revved. Valve oil-seals can go which means you'll be burning oil.

I'd normally say accelerate hard in second gear to see if it jumps out (indicating a damaged gear) but in this weather not a great idea. Confused Re-cutting gears is expensive, a second-hand engine is often cheaper.

Oh and steering head bearings may need replacing if the owner likes a wheelie.

It's scared of the '98 R1 and hides in the shed making little oil puddles when the '98 is on the prowl...

On any bike, it's when you're changing from 1st to 2nd that you're in most danger of damaging the gearbox. The fact that the engine has to move through a greater number of revs, and the neutral in between means that you're more likely to let the clutch out too soon when the cogs aren't meshed.

Add to that people trying to do clutchless changes during power-wheelies and it's no wonder that most sportsbikes have a reputation for lunching second gear cogs.
